Bishop Silva’s Reminder of the Importance of Voting

(Joaquin Corbalan P / Shutterstock.com)

October 15, 2024
Memorial of St. Theresa of Avila

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Diocese of Honolulu,

Peace be with you!

St. Theresa of Avila was known for her personal holiness, but also for her vision and hard work in reforming the Carmelite Order, which had become very lax. Some applauded her efforts, while others opposed them; but she knew, through her prayerful discernment, that this reform was the will of God, even though it was difficult to achieve.

As we approach the 2024 election, we know that there is much to be reformed in our own country. We have lost a respect for life in all its stages. We have allowed marriage and solid parenting as the basis for a stable society to erode. We have the heavy challenge of not only housing the homeless but of addressing the root causes of homelessness. Our civil disagreement with one another has become toxic, demonizing of those who do not agree with us. While religious freedom once prevailed, there was a general sense that religion was respected for its thoughtful and experienced service of the community, and this, too, has eroded.

We are soon to experience one of the most important elections for the future of our country. It is our duty as followers of Jesus to take our civic duties seriously. We are to be good stewards of our beloved land by voting, so that those we elect can embody the values that will truly reform our country. We need to carefully prepare for voting by prayerfully discerning the Lord’s will and applying what we discern on the ballot. And even after the election we need to continually pray for our elected leaders and stay engaged with them, so that the gift of democracy that has been given to us can truly flourish.

Please pray, discern, and VOTE! St. Theresa, pray for us!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Larry Silva
Bishop of Honolulu

15 Years a Saint: Recalling St. Damien’s Canonization

Pilgrims from Hawaii look on during St. Damien's canonization on October 11, 2009. (HCH file photo)

By Jennifer Rector
Hawaii Catholic Herald

On Oct. 11, 2009, people speaking different languages and from many nations all united at the Vatican to witness Pope Benedict XVI proclaim Hawaii’s first saint — Father Damien de Veuster of Molokai.

The canonization of St. Damien put a spotlight on his courageous story of ministry to Hansen’s disease patients on the isolated Kalaupapa peninsula.

Starting in 1873, he worked among the patients sent to live in the remote settlement until he caught the disease, then known as leprosy, himself. He died in Kalaupapa in 1889 at age 49.

Fifteen years after his canonization, several people who made the long journey to Rome recalled their once-in-a-lifetime experience. Read more...

Franciscan Values Help Our Mission as Catholics

From the Office for Social Ministry

“We Christians are all responsible for the Church’s mission…Everyone. That is why we need to walk together, taking the path of synodality.”
Pope Francis Prayer Intention for October 2024

Every year at the beginning of October, we celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, who embodied the values of caring for creation and solidarity with the poor. As we move about our day in a world scarred by violent conflicts, environmental crises, and persistent poverty, these Franciscans values can help the compass of our lives as Christians and our mission as Catholics. In the spirit of the saint from Assisi, Pope Francis two papal encyclicals Laudato Si and Fratelli Tutti remind us we are all as brothers and sisters called to respond to the connected cry of the earth and the poor in caring for our common home and creating a new economy.  Pope Francis says “Today a new economy inspired by Francis of Assisi can and must become an economy of friendship with the earth and an economy of peace. It is a question of transforming an economy that kills into a ‘Francesco economy’ of life.” Read more...

Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

From Most Reverend Clarence (Larry) Silva
Bishop of Honolulu

General Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate  Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

While this very important celebration is usually on December 8, since that is a Sunday of Advent this year, all the Masses for December 7/8 must be for the Second Sunday of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. Although the Paulist Press Ordo says it is not a day of obligation this year, in order to give due honor to our national patroness, and since the Diocese of Honolulu only observes this Solemnity and the Solemnity of Christmas as holy days of obligation, I hereby decree that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is to be celebrated  on Monday, December 9, 2024, as a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Diocese of Honolulu. Pastors are to schedule Masses so that all may observe this holy day of obligation and to publicize that it is a holy day of obligation well in advance of December 9. Any Vigil Mass celebrated on Sunday, December 8 is to be a Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, not for the Immaculate Conception.

This decree is to be promulgated as law through publication in the Hawaii Catholic Herald and in the diocesan eNews.

Given at the Office of the Bishop on September 26, 2024.

From the Office for Social Ministry

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Saint of the Week

Saint Teresa of Ávila
1801–1890
Memorial – October 9

Saint Teresa of Ávila, also known as Saint Teresa of Jesus, was born Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada in Ávila, Spain, to very faithful Catholic parents. Her father, Sánchez, had been married previously. He and his first wife, Catalina, had three children together, one daughter and two sons. After Catalina died, Sánchez married Beatriz with whom he had nine children, seven boys and two girls. Teresa was the third child of her father’s second marriage. By age six or seven, Teresa began to think seriously about her life of faith, desiring to become a saint and even a martyr. When Teresa was only twelve, her mother died, leaving her heartbroken.
