Holy Days of Obligation

Please note that in the Diocese of Honolulu, in addition to all Sundays of the year, there are only two Holy Days of Obligation on which the faithful are obliged to attend Mass: December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and December 25, Christmas (which falls on a Sunday this year).  Be sure to check your parish’s Mass schedule for these special days of our faith.

Eva Andrade's been Navigating Politics and Faith for Three Decades

Eva Andrade has been advocating for Catholic-Christian values in isle politics for close to 30 years. (HCH Photo | Anna Weaver)

Toward the end of a voting information night at One Love Ministries in Kakaako on Oct. 19, Eva Andrade told a story about her father as a way to explain why Christians need to advocate for their values with kindness.

Her dad, Jim Andrade, was working in his front yard one day when a local politician, who lived in the neighborhood, came jogging by. Jim didn’t like the way that representative had voted and shouted a negative comment at the man.

Whenever the representative saw Andrade’s father after that, the politician avoided him. And while Andrade said that her father had every right to free speech, he also lost an opportunity to build a relationship with the elected official.

“We wear Christ like a garment, and people when they are in our presence, should smell the fragrance of Jesus,” Andrade said. “They should be smelling good stuff on us.” Read more...

Saint of the Week

St. Gertrude the Great
1256-1302
Memorial – November 16

Today’s saint, known as Saint Gertrude the Great, is one of the most provocative spiritual writers in the long and rich history of the Church. When just a child, she was placed in the care of Benedictine nuns, perhaps because of her parents’ early deaths. The high walls surrounding the cloister broadened the young girl’s mind, instead of confining it. For Gertrude, as for so many women of her era restricted by custom to narrow cultural lanes, a monastery-sponsored education amidst a self-governing community of women was superior to the forms of life otherwise available to them. Gertrude flourished in religious life and became well versed in the humanities, theology, and Latin, a language which she showed mastery of in her spiritual writings. At the age of twenty-five, Sister Gertrude had a jarring spiritual experience which would divide her life dramatically into two halves, “before” and “after.” “Before,” Gertrude was a faithful nun but overly interested in secular writers and knowledge for knowledge’s sake. “After,” she buried her head in Scripture, read widely in the Fathers of the Church, and melted under the high-amperage gaze beaming at her from the eyes of Christ.
