PittOrtho Resident Selected
Congratulations to Dr. Stephen Canton on being selected for the Orthopaedic Research Society Clinician Scholar Career Development Program (CSCDP). The CSCDP is an annual two-day training workshop for orthopaedic residents in their PGY2-PGY5 years, surgeons in fellowships, and junior faculty (through year three) who have the potential and desire to become orthopaedic clinician scholars.
Clinician scholars are transforming the future of orthopaedics through their commitment to innovative research, and we could not be prouder of all of our residents and fellows at PittOrtho.

Grand Rounds Guest Kristofer J. Jones, MD

Our UPMC Sports Medicine and PITT ORTHO teams were pleased to host Kristofer J. Jones, MD, for Grand Rounds on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. Dr. Jones is an orthopaedic sports medicine specialist and Associate Professor at the UCLA Orthopaedic Center.
He serves as Head Team Physician and Director of Orthopaedic Surgery for the Los Angelas Lakers and Team USA Basketball. His talk on cartilage repair in high level athletes was engaging and informative.

Welcome To All! PittOrtho and BMRC Labs Celebrate New Academic Year
|
The annual PittOrtho Welcome Picnic was held this year at the Greensburg Country Club. This year was a special event, as PittOrtho celebrated jointly with colleagues in the Bethel Musculoskeletal Research Center labs. Greensburg Country Club was a beautiful backdrop for our picnic this year, offering plenty of activities for our PittOrtho family and a delicious picnic lunch. We'd like to send a big thank you to Mr. Orland Bethel, who stopped by to say hello.

UPMC/CNX M.O.V.E.S Interns Graduate
|
Congratulations to the UPMC/CNX M.O.V.E.S Program interns on their successful graduation!
Students completed 6-week internships at various UPMC locations including UPMC Magee, UPMC Mercy, UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. CPR traning was offered during the graduation, allowing students to gain one more certification that can assist them in their future job search.
Participants then celebrated that evening at PNC Park, where they enjoyed a Pittsburgh Pirate baseball game and snacks.
Developed in 2023, the UPMC/CNX M.O.V.E.S (Motivation, Opportunity, Value, Experience, Success) Program provides internships, externships, volunteer opportunities, job shadowing experiences, and on-site visits to 11th and 12th grade students in the CNX Mentorship Academy program.

After a rigorous search process, five outstanding early- career researchers have demonstrated exceptional potential in advancing the field of musculoskeletal research.

UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion and Ryan Blaney Foundation Team Up
|
|
The Ryan Blaney Family Foundation (RBFF), a brain-health non-profit formed by NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney, is teaming up with UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Clinic with their Fund-A-Fellow program. Ryan’s father, Dave Blaney, received treatment at UPMC for a severe concussion after a racing accident, which inspired his family to support the program.
The Fund-A-Fellow program will fund the training of fellows at the world-renowned UPMC Concussion Clinic. Upon completion of the 2-year program, these doctors will move on to other practices throughout the country, thereby eliminating the need for all patients to travel to Pittsburgh, PA for treatment.
Dr. Nacona Bunker started with the UPMC Concussion Clinic earlier this year and has made great strides with the program so far. Her clinical and research interests include recovery patterns following sports-related concussion and performance validity testing with athletes following concussion.
