People who are struggling to manage their type 1 diabetes are set to be offered new technology to help them control their condition with little human input. In draft guidance, an independent NICE committee has recommended the use of hybrid closed loop systems for managing blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes – technology that has been described as a step towards an artificial pancreas. Cambridge scientists have successfully trialled an artificial pancreas for use by people living with type 2 diabetes. The device – powered by an algorithm developed at the University of Cambridge – doubled the amount of time people were in the target range for glucose compared to standard treatment and halved the time spent experiencing high glucose levels. Latest research shows that HbA1c screening in middle-aged adults can help diagnose diabetes two years faster than routine clinical care. These findings show that HbA1c screening can prevent individuals living with undiagnosed diabetes.
