Get Involved in DOM Faculty Development and ResearchThe Department of Medicine's Office of Faculty Development provides support programs and developmental opportunities to ensure the success of our faculty. This is a challenging, yet exciting task, as we currently have more than 600 faculty who contribute daily to our outstanding patient care, research, and teaching activities. The Office of Faculty Development is able to accomplish this important work in large part through our committees. In addition, the Office of Research has specific committees with similar goals to provide developmental opportunities. Together, we are currently looking for new members for five committees. Please find committee descriptions below. More details, along with sign up information, will be sent later this month. Faculty Development Committee This is the parent committee on faculty development that discusses current issues, initiates and develops new programs, and provides advice to Dr. Kathy Griendling, vice chair for research and faculty development. Promotions and Tenure Subcommittee This committee has the important task of evaluating all senior promotion cases within the Department of Medicine. Committee members also offer individualized CV reviews and perform mid-year reviews of tenure-track candidates. Mentoring Subcommittee This committee is responsible for developing, enhancing, and maintaining mentoring within the department. DOM IT Committee This committee is responsible for evaluating the IT needs of the DOM, developing governance around IT, and monitoring implementation of new technologies and our DOM IT support staff. STrategic Advisory Research Team (START) This team is responsible for new initiatives in the research arena, advising the chair on policy and prioritizing research needs. This working committee greatly influences the direction and success of research in the department. ResearchDiscovery Phase Research Mentors and Projects We are looking for research active faculty to participate in the Discovery Phase of the Medical School Curriculum by mentoring a medical student research project. Topics in clinical, translational, or basic science, or in the medical humanities, including creative writing, medical history, business, or law, as they pertain to medicine, are all potential areas as long as they lead to a scholarly product. Discovery is a required five-month phase of the curriculum during which students do full-time research under the direction of their chosen mentor. Students have no responsibilities during this time other than research, so projects should be substantial enough to merit five months of full-time effort, but also should be feasible for what is not a long period in research terms. If you have a project in mind and would like to act as a mentor, please complete this survey. Researcher Survival Skills: Project Management This session will teach participants a way of thinking and a set of tools that can help them plan so they are better equipped to meet project goals and navigate conflict. Speaker: Steve Walton, professor in the Practice of Information Systems and Operations Management, Goizueta Business School.
