Welcome to the latest edition of the CSDE Newsletter.  This newsletter features key efforts at the Connecticut State Department of Education. As your Commissioner of Education, I continue to be proud of the work the agency engages in, partnering with all our stakeholders, on behalf of students and educators in our state.  Recent important undertakings include, releasing the K-3 Literacy Plan and Webinar Series: Infinite Possibilities: Doing This Together, in addition to hosting the Commissioner’s Educator Roundtable and launching the Commissioner’s Superintendent Advisory Panel. The Department has announced the Commissioner’s Summer Math Challenge to support and enhance schools’ efforts to help every student access grade level content.  Enjoy the summer, a time for much-deserved relaxation with family and friends.  Be well! Governor Lamont & Commissioner Russell-Tucker Applaud Legislative Confirmation of State Board of Education Members

Dr. Juan Carlos Salazar, Dr. Seth D. Zimmerman, and Kristen A. Record were confirmed in May as new members of the State Board of Education. Bonnie E. Burr and Erik M. Three Connecticut Students Named 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Three Connecticut students were named as 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars for their accomplishments in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields. The recognition is one of the nation’s

Commissioner's Superintendent Advisory Panel Commissioner Russell-Tucker launched the Commissioner’s Superintendent Advisory Panel to inform and support education

policy discussions and decisions. This panel gives voice to education systems leaders to inform state level policy and action.

SHU's Teacher Leader Fellowship Academy Institute Commissioner Russell-Tucker joined former Education Commissioner Betty J. Sternberg and Dr. Gholdy Muhammad at

Sacred Heart University's Teacher Leader Fellowship Academy Institute to highlight the amazing work of our teachers and administrators.

Our Community Salutes Commissioner Russell-Tucker joined Maj. Gen. Fran Evon, Commissioner Welch, Rep. Anthony Nolan, and other leaders, at “Our Community Salutes," a national, non-profit organization that

recognizes, honors, and supports high school seniors who plan to enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces following graduation. >> Read More.

Commissioner’s Educator Roundtable The CSDE hosted a teacher roundtable with representatives from the CT Teacher of the Year Council, Educators for Excellence, and union representation. The

discussion centered teacher voice on strategies for student success, supporting and strengthening the profession, and the future of teaching.

Commissioner Addresses Quinnipiac Graduates The Commissioner gave the keynote commencement address for Quinnipiac University's graduation ceremony for the Schools of Education and Nursing,

encouraging them to see barriers as obstacles to overcome, that nothing is impossible as they embark on this life-changing beginning >> Read More.

The Lieutenant Governor's Computing Challenge Commissioner Russell-Tucker, CSDE staff, and partners joined Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz to celebrate The Lieutenant Governor's Computing Challenge.

This year’s challenge saw a 68% increase in participation and a 117% increase in project submissions. Congratulations to all the student awardees and all the educators who supported them. We are all working together to promote and cultivate a love of STEM learning across CT!

State Student Advisory Council on Education The State Student Advisory Council on Education eloquently updated the State Board of Education on ways to continue improving CT’s literacy rates and increasing dual

enrollment for high school students across the state. This is another example of the Commissioner's and the State Board of Education’s commitment to amplifying student voice.

Congratulations to Connor and Yasmeen Congratulations to the State Board of Education’s outgoing, non-voting student members Connor Cowan and Yasmeen Galal, both of whom be attending Harvard University this fall. The Commissioner and the SBE thank you for your work throughout the past year.

CT Grows Its Own: Planting the Seeds for Future Educators Deputy Commissioner Sinthia Sone-Moyano, Deputy Commissioner Charles Hewes, Chief Talent Officer Shuana Tucker, and Educator Diversity Coordinator

Mary Glassman attended the CT Grows Its Own: Planting the Seeds for Future Educators professional development and learning day hosted by the University of St. Joseph. Congresswoman Hayes, Senator McCrory, and Waterbury Superintendent Dr. Ruffin all shared their stories to a room filled with aspiring educators.

Teacher Appreciation Video In a special video presented during Teacher Appreciation Week, Governor Ned Lamont, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas, Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker, and CSDE staff said, 'Thank you,' to their favorite school teachers when growing up.

As in prior years, this program will provide special discounts to all PK-12 public and private school staff, including Adult Education program staff, over the summer months. Eligible public and private school staff include bus drivers, paraeducators, administrators, school nurses, teachers, school nutrition staff, school counselors, school psychologists, custodians, and everyone who plays a part in the school ecosystem.
