Click here 25 August 2021 CaRST eNewsletterCareer Control for Researchers - Applications now open Career Control for Researchers is an online program which gives HDR students the tools, guidance and confidence to take charge of their career direction, determine their own priorities and accelerate their progress. This online program is delivered over an 8 weeks timeframe and includes live, web-based discussion with career specialists. You will also complete self-paced modules with a total average time commitment of 1-1.5 hours per week. This program is recognised for 13 CaRST credits in Domain B. The course will run from 5 October 2021 to 26 November 2021, and Expressions of Interest for this program are now open. To register your interest in the course, please complete and submit the online Expression of interest form by 9:00am Monday 6 September 2021. Confidence Fitness When: 26 August 2021, 2:00pm - 3:00pm Confidence is like a muscle- the more you use it, the stronger it gets. In this session, Sharron Ferrier of Persuasive Presentations, will share how to be more confident when presenting your research. Register here. Engaging with Industry When: 31 August 2021, 2:30pm - 4:00pm Independent of your area of research, and independent of your future career plans, engaging and collaborating with others outside of the academic environment will form part of your future working life. This hands-on workshop will provide a vital framework and starting point for becoming industry confident, as we address questions regarding engagement management and how to develop a long-term strategic partnerships for continued success in this area. Register here. Working with your Supervisor (HMS) When: 2 September 2021, 10:00am - 12:00pm The relationship you have with your supervisor is crucial in determining your PhD experience. They are your primary source of guidance as you undertake an individual research project and even the best student/supervisor relationships can experience periods of strain through the ups and downs of research. In this workshop you will learn what you can do to establish a positive working relationship with your supervisor and ultimately get the most out of your HDR experience. Register here. Presenting your Research with Confidence When: 10 September 2021, 10:00am - 12:30pm If you’re a researcher then at some stage you are going to have to present your findings. It’s tempting to get up and just read your paper, but to really speak to your audience you need to be able to communicate skilfully and with conviction. We’ve all been to dull presentations so it’s worth your while spending a little time to learn how to do it properly. This workshop will provide a clear step-by-step structure that you can use again and again to give high quality presentations. Register here. Other Training & DevelopmentHPC and Data in Materials Design and Discovery A 12-week online, collaboratively taught course for Australian graduate students and researchers. The curriculum design aims to support graduate students and ECRs working in the space between HPC/Big Data and computational materials science with hands-on tutorials. 1st September to 26th November 2021; Wednesdays and Fridays 1:30pm-2:30pm. English Language Series for HDRs Presented by the English Language Centre, this series of workshops focuses on the preparation of the research proposal and the appropriate language of academic writing. These workshops are best suited for international students and students with English as a second language; however, all students are welcome to attend. · Planning your Research Proposal: 21 September 2021, 2:00pm - 5:00pm. Leximancer: An Introduction Leximancer is software which allows a quantitative analysis of text files according to word association. The analysis process gives a picture of the associations between key concepts in text files. The workshop covers the assumptions made within a Leximancer analysis, and how the software deals with different issues within a set of text documents. Part of the workshop is a hands-on exercise where participants analyse a simple text data set.
