Who we are: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is a nonprofit organization that strives to improve education and opportunities of lower-income families within Allegheny County through strategic partnerships with the community and faith-based organizations. We offer programs for students from kindergarten through high school that focus on supplementary learning as well as higher education.

Description: Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in eager Pitt Psychology students looking to apply their academic learning with an authentic field experience in our High School University (HSU) program. The Neighborhood Learning Alliance High School University (HSU) Program partners with Carlow University and CCAC to provide primarily low-income and students of color access to free college courses and work-related work experience.

The Pitt Psychology intern will serve as a college and career readiness mentor for up to four 11th and/or 12th grade high school students. The mentor will serve as the key support person guiding the student through the NLA College and Career Readiness curriculum.

Duties of Intern:

  • Guide mentees through the college application process.
  • Support students with identifying and completing scholarships.
  • Conduct small-focused group activities using the curricular resources provided.
  • Collaborate with the HSU team to ensure the students are on track to meeting their personal goals.
  • Support students with understanding the college application process, career pipeline programs, and high school-to-work opportunities.
  • Conduct wellness checks with students and collaborate with the NLA team to secure outside resources needed for student success.
  • Maintain meeting and case management notes.
  • Assist with the overall planning and implementation of programming.
  • Create a college and career readiness focus unit relevant to your student support group.

Requirements:  Neighborhood Learning Alliance is interested in candidates that have a strong interest in and connection to underserved communities. The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to learning, developing, and working outside their comfort zone.  Candidates should submit a letter of interest and resume.

Neighborhood Learning Alliance’s (NLA) After-School Program is designed to empower K-5 students to embrace their genius, establish a sense of community, and explore learning activities that enhance their health and well-being. This is done through active play, project-based learning, enriched learning experiences, and field trips.

Duties of Intern:

  • Teach positive interaction skills to K-5 students through modes of role play, storytelling, drawing, etc.
  • Conduct small-focused group activities using the curricular resources provided.
  • Collaborate with the K-5 team to create engaging learning activities.
  • Support students with understanding their emotions and effective communication.
  • Support the after-school staff with developing individual support plans.
  • Create your own focus unit that addresses the immediate needs of the students being served as a culminating project.
  • Assist with the overall planning and implementation of the daily programming and activities.
  • Assist with daily procedures and program structures.
  • Manage student attendance and activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program space.

HealthCorps Internship - Accepting Applications for Fall 2024

Who we are: We’re HealthCorps – a national, non-profit organization committed to improving lives by addressing health inequities in communities through programming that includes innovative and engaging experiences for teens in education, leadership, and service learning. We empower teens by encouraging them to become change agents within their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Our program is grounded in the understanding that limited access to health education can lead to a lifetime of social, emotional and physical challenges.

Description:

As a TMHH Mentor, you will serve as a near-peer mentor to local middle and high school students over the semester. You will gain hands on experience leading our health and wellness club, Teens Make Health Happen, in area schools and by supporting teens in planning and leading wellness programming such as lunchtime demonstrations, step challenges and community improvement projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop Strong Relationships. You will collaborate with teen wellness leaders and site partners to ensure effective delivery of HealthCorps’ programming across 2 – 3 school sites. You will collaborate with your Regional Program Manager and other area mentors and participate in ongoing professional development and leadership opportunities provided by the organization at no-expense.
  • Assess Your Schools’ Needs and Progress. You will research what health inequities the schools you serve are facing, and then measure your impact by completing a needs assessment, reporting, and tracking your work throughout your mentorship.
  • Manage Teens Make Health Happen Clubs. You will plan and implement the successful delivery of the HealthCorps’ program offering, Teens Make Health Happen, between 6- 8+ hours (each week) throughout the course of the semester. Your commitment to this program will require you to be at your assigned school sites/campuses for 3-4 hours each week for instructional purposes.
  • Share and Make Aware. You will host Café O Yea demonstrations at each of your sites monthly and support regional events. You will support and contribute to HealthCorps’ social media platforms (Instagram, TikTok, etc.) by sharing program highlights, stories of impact, and photos that will shine a bright light on your students.
  • Commit to the HealthCorps Mission. You will prioritize health and wellness on a daily basis and, ultimately, work to ensure that relevant, local health-resources are accessible for all students and staff at your respective sites. Your spark to serve will leave a lasting, positive impact on your community.
  • Represent HealthCorps in Pittsburgh. You will be an embodiment and extension of our organization and our values, both inside and outside your sites. Your presence -- whether at your assigned sites or at an area-wide event -- will be an asset in outreach efforts that connect teens, staff and community members to HealthCorps resources and materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An undergraduate or graduate college student majoring, or interested, in public health, public policy, biology, nutrition, marketing, psychology, education, social work or other related fields
  • In good academic standing with your university
  • A commitment of 6-8+ hours each week to the mentorship for the entire Fall or Spring semester
  • A self-expectation and strong desire to grow personally and professionally as a leader in the community, and as a speaker who is comfortable in learning and presenting on health-related topics to a teen audience

General Information: 
The school sites are all in the Pittsburgh region and accessible by local transportation. Site placement will depend on the mentor's availability.

Clinical Research Coordinator II, Emory University

The Clinical Research Coordinator II handles administrative activities generally associated with the conduct of clinical trials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages research project databases, develops flow sheets and other study related documents, and completes source documents/case report forms.
  • Provides guidance to less experienced staff.
  • Interfaces with research participants, determines eligibility and consents study participants according to protocol.
  • Approves orders for supplies and equipment maintenance.
  • Assists in developing recruitment strategies and conducting screenings for study participants including interviews and questionnaires.
  • Supervises collection of study specimens and processing.
  • Establishes case packages for study procedures, monitors scheduling of procedures and charges, coordinates other services as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with research protocols, reviews case report forms and audits for accuracy with source documents, attends monitoring meetings with sponsors.
  • Prepares regulatory submissions.
  • With appropriate credentialing and training may perform phlebotomy or diagnostics.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED and five years of clinical research experience.
  • Or two years of college in a scientific, health related, or business administration program and three years clinical research experience.
  • Or a licensed as a practical nurse (LPN) and two years clinical research experience.
  • Or a Bachelor's degree in a scientific, health related, or business administration related program and one year of clinical research experience.

Two Full-time Project Coordinators, Binghamton University (SUNY) Mood Disorders Institute

The Binghamton Mood Disorders Institute, directed by Dr. Brandon Gibb, is seeking to hire two full-time post-baccalaureate Research Assistants to start as soon as July 1, 2024. These are a full-time grant-funded positions to serve as project coordinators for an NIMH-funded R01 examining early markers of risk in infants of mothers with postpartum depression. The study focuses on the development of attentional biases for facial displays of emotion across the first two years of life (assessed during computer-based eye tracking tasks and mother-infant interactions) and the role of infant psychophysiology in the development of these biases. The study also examines transactional relations between mother and infant affect, attention, and physiology within mother-infant interactions at each assessment and across infant development.

Duties will include coordinating participant recruitment, preparation of study materials, and conducting participant assessments (diagnostic and life events interviews, eye tracking, psychophysiology, etc.). The research assistant will also have opportunities to co-author scientific papers and journal articles. This is an excellent position for a college graduate who is interested in gaining additional research experience before applying to graduate school. Human Subjects Research Coordinator, University of Rochester, Active Perception Lab and Vision & Psychosis Lab

The Active Perception Lab and the Vision & Psychosis Lab at the University of Rochester is searching for a full-time Human Subjects Research Coordinator who will contribute to a federally funded investigation of fine-scale eye movement differences in psychosis. Activities include: (a) administering or assisting with clinical assessments (SCID/PANSS) to diagnose participants and to assess symptom severity; (b) assisting with recruiting participants and scheduling appointments; (c) attending weekly lab meetings of Professors Martina Poletti and Brian Keane; (d) maintaining and updating study databases (i.e., REDCap); (e) preparing materials for IRB review; (f) delegating responsibilities to other lab members; (g) preparing written scientific results for publication and conference presentation; and (h) assisting with administrative/ clerical duties as needed. This position can be viewed as a stepping-stone toward graduate or professional school and we make every effort to get our lab members actively involved in ongoing research projects.

Essential Duties
• 30% Clinical and ocular assessment
o Runs or assists with diagnostic, neuropsychological, and      symptom-based assessments including the PANSS and SCID (training will be provided when appropriate).
o Conducts ocular pathology screening using optical coherence tomography, tonometer, and other ophthalmologic instruments (we will provide training).
o Implements or assists with protocols for oculomotor testing including use of a dual Purkinje eye tracker and Badal optometer.

• 30% Project Management
o Conducts all study-related IRB correspondence, including: creating initial submissions, protocol amendments and exceptions; drafting protocols, consent forms, and recruitment materials; reporting protocol deviations and adverse events; and submitting annual continuing reviews of active and inactive studies.
o Collaborates with Professors Keane and Poletti to ensure regulatory and other documents (e.g., NIH progress reports) are complete and on time.
o Complete regular subject chart reviews.

• 30% Participant recruitment
o Conducts face-to-face recruitment efforts in local clinics serving people with serious mental illness and at psychiatric residential settings.
o Assists with recruitment using online resources (social media, CraigsList, etc)

• 5% Data Management
o Ensures the integrity and security of all paper and electronic study data.
o Oversee data entry and supervise other study staff in using REDCap databases.

• 5% Reporting and dissemination
o Assist in the writing and editing of presentations and publications of study findings.

Requirements & Preferences
Candidate will subscribe to the University's goal of creating a culturally competent environment by treating research subjects and co-workers in a sensitive and caring manner. The Research Assistant must complete the Human Subjects Protection Program (HSPP) and NIH's Good Clinical Practice training.
     
The successful candidate will have at least a bachelor’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a related discipline by the first day of work. Experience in vision research and oculomotor control is a plus but not required. Candidates with at least one 1 year of experience in human subject research coordination, or an equivalent combination of education and experience are strongly preferred. We also strongly prefer candidates who have a car, a valid driver license, and who can commit to two years of service. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Experience or strong interest in administering clinical instruments such as the SCID and PANSS is advantageous but not required.

Clinical Psychology Research Technician, Purdue University, PACER Lab

The PACER Lab at Purdue University (PI: Dan Foti) is seeking a full-time research assistant to support data collection for a grant-funded study focused on the associations between environmental exposure to PFAS, brain functioning, and mental health symptoms. The research assistant will help with day-to-day lab operations including recruitment and scheduling; management of clinical, EEG, and cognitive data; and in-person data collection which can include any combination of clinical, cognitive, and neurophysiological assessments. They also will assist the lab director with volunteer training. Opportunities for mentored, independent research are available, if desired. This position is ideal for a recent college graduate interested in applying to graduate school. You must submit a cover letter to be considered.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field
  • 3 months to 1 year of experience in a research lab
