Director's Message

Welcome to all new students who have enrolled over the last couple of weeks! It is exciting to see so many domestic and international students pursuing a Higher Degree by Research at The University of Adelaide. You may have noticed that the campus is getting very busy, with all buildings open and Orientation Week taking place this week. Even though the majority of events are aimed towards undergraduate students, there are great opportunities for HDRs to connect, get to know the University or just have fun. Please check out the website for more information.

The Graduate Centre team is also back on campus and our front reception desk is open Mon – Fri, 10am – 4pm. For the newbies, you can find us on Level 10 in the Schulz Building. Of course, you can direct your enquiries to us by email graduate.centre@adelaide.edu.au or phone +61 8 8313 5882 as well.

As you may be aware, the 28th of March is the implementation day of the University’s Organisational Sustainability Program (OSP) which represents the University’s response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. We have delayed the update of the Research Student Handbook until the changes to the University due to OSP have been made. Please refer to the current Handbook until the 2022 Research Student Handbook is released in April/May, and watch out for further communication from the Graduate Centre over the next couple of weeks so you don’t miss any important information related to OSP.

The 28th of March will also mark a big day for the Adelaide Graduate Centre (AGC). I am very excited to announce that the AGC will be renamed the Adelaide Graduate Research School (AGRS) to recognise and reflect the holistic nature of the AGC’s services which include HDR candidate whole-of-life-cycle management, supervisor development, Career Research Skills Training (CaRST), research internship opportunities, and HDR student support. Stay tuned for more information.

Until then, enjoy the festive activities and events around the campus and the city.

Tip of the Month

Please sign-in wherever you find a QR Code in front of our buildings to allow SA Health to track major COVID-19 outbreaks. In case you are unfortunate to test positive for COVID-19, please inform your supervisor and send a note to hrservicecentre@adelaide.edu.au.

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

A Unique Student Identifier [USI] is a reference number that creates an online record of your qualifications attained in Australia. All students need a USI  to receive a qualification upon successful completion from 2023.

To create your USI, please visit the Australian Government’s website. The personal details you provide here must be exactly the same as those on record at the University of Adelaide. Once created, log into Access Adelaide and enter your USI in the Statistical Section page, under the ‘Students’ menu. Please contact Ask Adelaide if you require assistance.

For international and offshore students, further information is available here; offshore international students are not required to provide a USI.

New Model for APR Intern Program Delivery in 2022

Following the completion of the initial Government grant period, APR.Intern has undergone an extensive review to establish a financially sustainable model going forward.

As of 1 January 2022, AMSI Member universities will derive an internship benefit including unlimited free mathematical sciences internships and a number of free non-mathematical sciences internships based on the university's level of AMSI membership. When a university has exhausted its non-mathematical sciences internship allocation, a $3,000 fee per internship will be levied.

As a full AMSI member, the University of Adelaide is entitled to 5 free internships outside of the Mathematical Sciences each year.

There are some additional changes to APR Intern this year:

  • During the Government grant period, funds were available to make a one-off $5,500 research account payment to Academic Mentors for their supervision of an internship. Feedback has shown this has not been an important factor in the Academic's participation and will be updated to a $1,000 honorarium as of 2022.

  • Following the recent pilot accepting Masters by Research students for certain internships and removing international student participation caps, these changes will continue in 2022.

  • The industry cost of engaging an intern will remain the same in 2022, with a growing number of program partnerships continuing to offer eligible businesses in Defence, Food & Agribusiness, Manufacturing and MedTech an internship subsidy. More information here.

Further information about APR Internship opportunities is available here.
