Naming Consultation Update

New Faculty Naming Next Steps

Thank you to everyone who contributed valuable input during the first round of the naming consultation for the New Faculty. We have received a wide range of thoughtful responses that have been used to shape a shortlist of names, which were further refined in workshops held last week. These events enabled 50+ staff and students to discuss the proposed options and continue shaping the identity of our new faculty.

We would like to thank all workshop participants for their engagement and support as we work toward selecting a name that reflects the faculty’s unique character and future direction.

A shortlist of names will be presented to the University Executive Committee on the 15th of October, followed by review and advice from the Senate on the 11th of November, before proceeding to the Vice-Chancellor for final approval.

Expanded Engineering Faculty Naming Next Steps

The expanded Faculty of Engineering faculty naming survey has now closed, and one of two hui has taken place.  Feedback from the first session was very positive with staff and student representation.

The second hui will be held in 405-344 on Wednesday, 16th October, at 2 pm. The purpose of the hui is to have conversations about the emerging naming options for the expanded engineering faculty.

Your feedback will play a key role in aligning the new faculty’s name with its evolving vision.  If you are interested in having your say in our new name, please come along.

Next Stage of Consultation Underway: Review and Number of Submissions

During the initial consultation period, we received 232 submissions from staff across the faculties and service divisions. These submissions are currently being reviewed and will help inform the next steps in the confirmation process.

We deeply value the input received, and the feedback will be instrumental in shaping the final structure.

To support staff in the next stages of the transition, redeployment workshops will be available starting 14th October. These tailored sessions will provide staff with practical tools and guidance to help them prepare strong expressions of interest (EOIs) for the new opportunities arising from the faculty review process.  In addition, the Aspire Career Centre is a useful tool for all staff to explore their career drivers, talents and values and access resources.  This can be accessed at any time. Visit the Aspire Careers Centre.

Consultation timeline overview

Monday 30 September – Friday 4 October

  • Feedback submissions on the proposal are collated.

From the 7th October

  • On 11th October, the Review Committee meets to consider the submissions and form recommendations for the Vice-Chancellor.

  • (Late-October) Either communicate the confirmation to all staff, continue consultation on an amended proposal, or not proceed any further with consultation.

We understand that times of change can bring both opportunities and challenges, and the University encourages staff to prioritise their mental health and wellbeing during this period. Confidential counselling and advisory services are available through EAP, which includes Rongoā Māori support, and additional resources can be accessed via the Change and Resilience hub on SharePoint.

Thank You for Your Continued Support

As we move through these important stages, your ongoing participation and feedback are valuable in shaping our future. While the final confirmation process is still underway, we will continue to operate as close to business as usual as possible to maintain stability throughout. We appreciate your thoughtful contributions as they play a key role in shaping the future of our faculty.
