Office of Human Resources

Dear valued Pitt staff member,

As you may be aware, the United Steelworkers (USW) has announced its intention to organize staff in non-trade positions at the University. We have a long history of working effectively with unions and respect the right of our employees to decide whether or not to choose a union. We strongly believe that the University of Pittsburgh provides an excellent workplace and is guided by a foundational model of shared governance, which is predicated on input from all constituents, including our staff.

The University is committed to maintaining clear lines of communication and providing you with access to accurate information and resources. We recognize that the unionization process is complex and that you may have questions about what it means for you. With this in mind, we have developed an information hub as a resource for our staff: staffunionization.pitt.edu.

This website contains answers to frequently asked questions and other resources to assist you in this process. The FAQs address basic information related to your right to join or not join a union. We will update the site periodically.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Office of Human Resources.

Thank you for all the hard work you do to make the University of Pittsburgh a great institution for all members of our community.

Sincerely,

James W. Gallaher, Jr.
Vice Chancellor for Human Resources
