“E hiki mai kou aupuni” — “Thy kingdom come.”
The episcopal motto of Bishop Michael Thomas Tupou Castori, SJ — taken from the Our Father recited in olelo Hawaii — anchored a liturgy rich with culture and symbolism in which the Jesuit priest was ordained and installed as the sixth bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu.
The July 28 Mass at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa in Honolulu was a testament to joy, faith, community and steadfastness. The threat of a tropical storm passing close to Hawaii — realized somewhat with gray skies and rain that cleared up as the Mass got underway — did little to quell the enthusiasm of those in attendance.
In the isles’ true aloha spirit, the many hundreds who saw Bishop Castori’s ordination and installation in person represented a wide range of places, cultures and traditions. Read more...

When most people hear about a mission trip, they imagine houses being built, supplies being distributed or volunteers serving communities in need.
Those things certainly happened during Damien Memorial School’s first Peru immersion trip over the summer break.
But by the end of 10 days in Peru this past June, five students and two chaperones returned to Hawaii with a very different understanding of mission — that it’s not simply about building a house, but about building relationships.
This summer, Damien Memorial became one of the first high schools in Hawaii to participate in the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers Peru Immersion Program. Read more...

Hawaiʻi's new bishop is already living the words inscribed on his coat of arms: E hiki mai kou aupuni — "Thy kingdom come" — and he is doing so through the spirit of aloha. Aloha is far more than a greeting or a warm expression of hospitality. At its deepest level, it is a way of life that recognizes the dignity of every human person because each one is created in the image of God. It recognizes one another as members of one ‘ohana, one family, brothers and sisters all, where no one is left behind. At its heart, aloha is selfless love. Read more...

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

ohn Eudes was born in Ri, a small farming village in Normandy, France, soon after the end of the Wars of Religion between Catholics and Calvinists. His devout Catholic parents made a pilgrimage to the Church of Notre-Dame de la Recouvrance, 120 miles from Ri, to dedicate their son to God.
After his Confirmation at age twelve, John made a personal vow of chastity, dedicating his life to God. As a teenager, he was educated in Caen by the Jesuits. Read more...
