- September Newsletter -

Welcome to the new look newsletter. The intention and the hope is that the newsletter will be much easier to digest. Social value is growing so rapidly that we do not want the newsletter to become too long to be helpful.

The content of this newsletter will now focus on news from our membership and opportunities we can offer you. You will notice that the events section of the newsletter has been removed, to be replaced by a weekly email for events in the Social Value International community.

Being a member led organisation we would really like to hear what you think, so please feel free to reply to this email with your thoughts on the update.

We really hope to see you at the 3S: Manage for Impact conference in Barcelona later this month. Don't miss out! Read on for all the details about that.

News from Social Value International

SROI Network Indonesia were officially ratified by the board at the August meeting. More details about the launch of the network are in the pipeline, but it must be acknowledged that the momentum for a network of this kind in Indonesia has been inspiring to witness.

"As a social activist, the presence of SROI provides a strong hope that any tangible or intangible impact can be properly identified, measured and communicated to all stakeholders. Of course this will encourage more and more parties to play a role in improving life."

Rini Suprihartanti, SROI Network Indonesia.

A new platform to learn more about social impact
How to make social impact happen? Still, this seems to be one of the core challenges that drives nonprofits and social investors equally.

PHINEO, an analysis and consulting firm based in Berlin, empowers organizations and people to plan, develop and track social impact. With the launch of the English website, PHINEO’s collective knowledge and expertise on impact-oriented project management is now made available to international impact enthusiasts.

The learning website provides answers to core impact questions such as "What does social impact actually mean?", "What is a logic model?" and "How can I track the impact of my project?".

In a step-by-step approach, the website sheds light to these matters and leads users through their own journey of implementing social impact into their project logic. Also, the website gives practical examples, grants access to work aids, and provides interactive elements to ensure a well-designed learning experience.

SIMNA recognised by Property Council of Australia for playing a leading role in fostering ongoing discussion on social valuation through stakeholder engagement.
"Social Impact Measurement Network of Australia (SIMNA) is playing a leading role in fostering ongoing discussion on social valuation through stakeholder engagement.

Listening to communities can unearth rich seams of value. Gibbs points to a youth centre project constructed shortly after Sydney’s Macquarie Fields riots in 2005.

We found the community members, many who were Indigenous, placed a very high value on having a place where young family members could be safe and interact with others in a traditional way – and that was something we hadn’t considered.”

New blog by Jeremy Nicholls: Managing impact, the conundrum for impact investors (and other funders).
There’s no shortage of advice and guidance out there on how to ‘measure’ social impact and, increasingly, a focus on managing impact.

At least if you are an enterprise delivering products or services. However, there is very little designed specifically for investors and grant makers and the general assumption seems to be that investors, grant makers and enterprises can all use the same approach and so the same guidance.

In reality they face very different challenges and recognising these means that investors would take a very different approach to managing the impact in their portfolios.
