Zemánková at The Good Luck Gallery, CA

May 27 – July 8, 2017

The Good Luck Gallery presents the fleshy, organic bricolage of Czech visionary artist Anna Zemánková (1908–1986). Thirty years after her death, interest in Zemánková has never been greater. Shows of her work will be up this summer at the Collection de l’Art Brut Lausanne and the Cavin-Morris Gallery in New York, while the Good Luck Gallery in Los Angeles present the first ever solo exhibit of Zemánková’s art in California, where her rarely-seen beaded and embroidered works will be shown, as well as many collages and drawings.

Luise Ross Gallery closes in New York

After 34 years in business, New York’s Luise Ross Gallery, one of the leading venues in the US that played a key role in developing a specialised market for outsider and self-taught artists’ creations, has closed. In a recent interview, gallery founder Ross said, “Thanks to the internet and for other reasons, people are now looking at, thinking about, and buying art in new and different ways. Running a traditional, physical-space gallery has become more challenging than ever.”

Ross did much to develop a market for the art of Bill Traylor, the black, self-taught artist who was born into slavery in Alabama. She also worked hard to promote other self-taught artists such as Minnie Evans, Thornton Dial, the Finnish painter Tyyne Esko, Albert Hoffman, Justin McCarthy, and others, alongside the work of schooled modern and contemporary artists.

Featured Artist: John Milkovisch
Beercan House, Houston, Texas

In 1968, tired of mowing his lawn, retired railway upholsterer John Milkovisch (1912–1988) concreted over his garden and embedded thousands of marbles, buttons, rocks and pieces of metal in the paths, the walls and the wooden fence. When his wife asked him to clad the walls of their clapboard bungalow with aluminium, he decided to use flattened beer cans.

Over a period of 18 years he attached tens of thousands of cans to the walls, making a feature of the printed designs. He hung the pull-tabs, tops and bottoms in strings from the roof to form curtains that shimmered and jingled as they turned in the wind. He also used cans to repair and decorate the outside fences and to make planters, arches, sculptures and whirligigs. After the Milkovischs died, the house was acquired by The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art and, after restoring it by replacing the corroded sections with donated vintage beer cans, it was reopened to the public in 2008.
