Spring Squads Are In: A New Season Starts HereThe new rep season is almost here, with Auckland’s Spring Squads named and ready for their first hit-out of 2026/27. The Spring Quad gets underway next weekend, with the Men’s and Women’s 1–5 Year teams taking the greens on Saturday, followed by the Premier and Development teams on Sunday. There’s a fresh feel to the campaign, with new coaching combinations, debutants and emerging talent coming through the 1–5 Year pathway. For the Men’s Premier and Development teams, the Spring Quad will be the first outing under new Head Coach Sean Hird, with Dean Edge joining as Assistant Coach alongside Tere Brunton. And there are plenty of new names to look out for across the six teams; men’s and women’s Premier, Development and 1–5 Year. 👉 Want to know who made the squads?
Tuesday nights are about to get Rapid!Three players. Three Tuesdays. Nine rapid-fire rounds. Forget settling in for a quiet Tuesday night - Rapid Roll Pairs is coming, and it’s time to find your three! Bowls Auckland’s fast-paced midweek format hits the greens this November, with quick games, big points and just the right amount of chaos. Each team has three players, with two on the green and one scoring, rotating throughout the night. Three rounds each Tuesday keep everyone involved and the games moving. And this isn’t traditional scoring. Every bowl counts - every bowl is worth points. A great draw, a big conversion or one slightly ambitious delivery can change the scoreboard in seconds. Leads can disappear quickly, and you’re never quite out of it until the final bowls are delivered. That’s the fun of it. Inspired by the fast-paced atmosphere of the Ultimate Bowls Championship, Rapid Roll brings something different to the Auckland bowls calendar. It’s competitive, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. Social, but with plenty to play for. Club colours. Friendly sledging. Music. Quick turnarounds. Plenty of bowls. This is Tuesday night bowls turned up. The competition runs 3, 10 and 17 November, with play getting underway from 5:45pm each week. All full-playing members are eligible, with each team representing the same Bowls Auckland-affiliated club. So, who’s in your three? Grab a couple of clubmates, come up with a team name, pull out the club colours and get yourselves entered. Whether you’re chasing bragging rights, looking for something different, or just want an excuse to get on the green after work, Rapid Roll is ready to roll. Building First Aid ConfidenceBeing ready to lend a hand when it matters is a pretty handy skill to have. This Wednesday, 17 members from across our club network came together at Balmoral for a one-day assessed Hato Hone St John First Aid Course. The practical course covered a variety of essential skills including CPR and defibrillation, managing choking and serious bleeding, responding to shock, and recognising common injuries and medical conditions. A great opportunity to build confidence and know-how that could make a real difference at the club, on the green or in everyday life. Thanks to everyone who took part and to Balmoral for hosting!
Good Luck at BurnsideGood luck to all the Auckland players heading south for this weekend’s Burnside National Under 26 Singles. The competition brings together some of the country’s best emerging talent, with a strong field from across New Zealand, Australia and the Cook Islands. Six Aucklanders are in the mix, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on how they get on. The action gets underway today, with section play continuing through Saturday before the finals on Sunday. Good luck, team Auckland, go well and enjoy the challenge! 👉Keep an eye on the results here "You can’t sell a secret”: Meet World Bowls President Brett O’Riley
Brett O’Riley arrived at a bowling club in Cambridge on a bicycle and was stopped at the gate. He and a friend had simply fancied a game. But there was a problem. “This guy met us at the gate in a blazer and said, ‘Excuse me, what are you doing here?’” They explained that they had come to play bowls. “‘Did you call anybody?’ “‘Have you got your own woods?’” Brett was living in England but had left his bowls in New Zealand. “We just wanted to have a social game. “And he said, ‘Well, I’m sorry, if you don’t have your own woods, you can’t play.’ “Now, that’s probably a perfectly reasonable response, but that’s not our game.” They tried another club. 👉 Read full World Bowls story
