Overall result: Auckland 44 matches, North Harbour 40

The 2021 Challenge was a great challenge and what a close challenge it was!

North Harbour is always a worthy opponent and this year proved to be no different.  They pushed, they prodded, they tested the Auckland sides all day long.

Four months without competitive events in Auckland is a long time. Match readiness and preparation may have been less than planned for some, but that didn't dampen player enthusiasm neither did the weather.

Weather conditions impact player performance.  It will force players to apply different technical and tactical skills, which players had to do on Sunday when contending with gusty winds.  That's the beauty of playing outdoor sports weather will test a player's resolve.

And there was plenty of it on both sides. Experienced and inexperienced representatives alike play at their best to contribute to the scoreboard.

Here's how the day unfolded

About our clubs

Henderson Bowling Club
The application for incorporation of Henderson Bowls Inc. was made on 13 April 1926. At this time fundraising by members assisted by the ladies of the Henderson Croquet club enabled land to be purchased between the banks of the Oratia Stream and the Henderson Primary School. A joint clubhouse was erected on the land and a bowling green and croquet lawn were laid.

Old clubhouse

In 1983/4 work was in progress with the Henderson Borough Council and the bowling community to design and build a venue suitable for a world championship event on the present site of Cranwell Park.

The facilities were funded from the proceeds of the former men’s bowls and croquet clubs’ property for commercial use, a contribution from the roading funds for the acquisition of the women’s bowls pavilion and green on Falls Park plus a grant from the lottery’s board.

Two highlights of the club’s history were the hosting of the Men’s World Championships in February 1988 followed by the Women’s World Championships in November of the same year.

Club opening days

Te Atatu Peninsula Bowling Club
Tēna koutou katoa.  Te Atatu Peninsula Bowling Club opens the 2021-22 season with a new executive team, new President, new sign, and a new vision!

With the vaccination certificate policy in place, members and visitors showing their vaccination passes, we were set to open on Saturday, 4 December 2021.

Opening started with a karakia led by our kaumatua Fred Holloway, who also unveiled our new sign.  We were pleased to have several special guests - David Ball and Graham Scott from Auckland Bowls; Linda Cooper, one of our true Westies and an Auckland Councillor, and our club patron Tina Payne along with a small number of our members and friends.

Although the number of people in attendance was less than in previous years, the atmosphere was encouraging. The opening ran to time with short but meaningful speeches delivered by the executive team and guests. Our secretary Rod Treadaway raised the flag, a first-year bowler from this community Michelle Ruka rolled up the jack, and 91-year-old Allie Blucher delivered the first bowl.

I would like to thank Josh Suddens for designing our new flag, Bluestar Group for their sponsorship, Steve Orr and Haki Watene for supplying, building, and installing the frame.

Now the season has begun, we want to say kia ora and welcome!  We wish good bowls to all bowling clubs and members.

Kia noho haumaru - stay safe

Waiheke, Rocky Nook and Pakuranga were amongst the clubs holding their opening days last weekend.
