Equity & Engagement in the STEM Classroom


Have you ever been trying to foster a conversation amongst your class, and been met with blank stares? You may assume this means students are not engaged. However, lack of verbal participation does not necessarily signal disengagement. There are different kinds of actions to support an equitable classroom where students of many identities can express their engagement in ways that are authentic to them.

Angela Stewart is an assistant professor in the School of Computing and Information, and a research scientist at Pitt’s Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC).
