We know only too well that there is great truth to the saying, “You are what you eat.” If we eat greasy foods, we are likely to develop clogged arteries or heart trouble. If we eat fast foods, we are likely to gain lots of weight. If we eat food fast, we are likely to miss out on some wonderful conversation with some good people. If we eat salty foods, high blood pressure is a danger. On the other hand, if we eat a balanced diet, including, in moderation, some things we like, we are more likely to be healthy. But we must learn how to eat well. It doesn’t necessarily come naturally. We need to be wise and discerning and disciplined. Read more...

Spared from Disaster, Historic Church Waits

Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina, which was miraculously untouched by the devastating wildfire except for some smoke damage, stood in the burn zone Aug. 3 amid cleanup efforts and properties that still bear the scars of last year’s disaster. (Celia K. Downes / Hawaii Catholic Herald)
By Celia K. Downes
Hawaii Catholic Herald
The visit to Maria Lanakila Church started on a warm Saturday morning outside Longs Drugs on Honoapiilani Highway.
Father Kuriakose Nadooparambil arrived promptly at 9:30 on Aug. 3 to take a reporter into Lahaina’s burn zone, which remains closed to the public a year after the wildfire disaster that claimed 102 lives and displaced thousands of residents.
The first step was to find a way in. Checkpoints at access roads ensure that only authorized individuals can enter.
Once Father Nadooparambil located a checkpoint, the drive to Maria Lanakila didn’t take long. Soon the car pulled into the driveway of the garage attached to the rectory, which stands to the left of the church. Read more...

From the Office for Social Ministry
"If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honored, all the parts share its joy." - 1 Corinthians 12:26
Just a year after being displaced from the wildfires that destroyed its classrooms in the historic town of Lahaina, Sacred Hearts School (SHS) officially opened its brand-new doors at a beautiful Kaanapali campus on August 2, 2024. In a special blessing ceremony, Principal Tonata Lolesio set the tone for the celebration by quoting the above scriptural passage, emphasizing the importance of all being parts of one Ohana in times of suffering and joy. She graciously thanked the whole SHS Ohana for working together through the challenges of the past year saying: “We were of one heart in the Lord in our response to the needs of others, the true spirit of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.” This blessing marked a new beginning for the parish school, which was founded by the Fathers and Sisters of the Sacred Hearts 150 years ago, and further developed by the Sisters of St. Francis,
who were all profoundly influenced by the lives of Saints Damien and Marianne. “Nothing is impossible,” Tonta said, echoing the spirituality of Hawaii’s two beloved saints. “With God all things are possible.” Read more...

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux
1090–1153
Solemnity – August 20
Bernard was born into a high-nobility family in Fontaines, France. He was the third of seven children, with five brothers and one sister. As a member of a wealthy family with high social status, Bernard likely received a comprehensive education. His devout parents instilled in him a deep faith. At a young age, he was sent to be educated by the canons of the Church of Saint-Vorles at Châtillon-sur-Seine, located about eighty miles north of his hometown. There, he studied grammar, poetry, literature, rhetoric, dialectics, Scripture, and theology. He excelled in the study of Scripture, personalizing it through prayer. He also held a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, continually seeking her intercession. Read
