Dr. Kimberly Manning delivered the commencement address at Medical College of GA, a particularly notable honor as the MCG students chose her to be the keynote. Click here to watch Dr. Manning's full commencement speech (timestamp 15:20 - 37.34). Dr. Jason Schneider was spotlighted by the Department of Medicine for Pride Month. What does Pride mean to you? While Pride is a time of celebration, it’s important to remember its origins as a riot at the Stonewall Inn in 1969. Even today, with the progress that has been made, we have to remain steadfast in fighting for full equality and inclusion for LGBTQ+ populations.
I am a cisgender, gay-identified male. Since I was a medical student at NYU I have strived to intertwine my personal identities with my professional life. Training at institutions, like NYU and Emory, that place value in caring for underserved populations, I was inspired to focus my efforts on LGBTQ+ populations. My career has been a mix of efforts in education, policy development, advocacy, and research. Can you share more about your LGBTQ+ work at Emory? Currently, I serve as the chair of the SOM’s LGBTQ+ Faculty Affinity Group. I was a co-founder of the Gender Center at Grady, offering interdisciplinary care for transgender and gender-diverse people in metro Atlanta. I have seen patients there since our launch in 2017. Additionally, I currently have two active research projects addressing healthcare needs for transgender women. Dr. Sara Turbow was appointed as an Associate Editor for the CDC's Preventing Chronic Disease Journal. Dr. Turbow is also principal investigator for the Atlanta Interprofessional Student Hotspotting program, which received a 2024 President's Grant from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation. The program addresses the need for more experiential interprofessional education by fostering collaborative, patient-centered care among high-cost, high-need patients and teams of 5-7 students from local medical, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, public health, and social work programs. Dr. Tiffany Walker received the Wilhelmina Jenkins ME/CFS Service Award. This award honors Wilhelmina Jackson, who has 40 years of experience in advocacy for ME/CFS (Myalgic encephalomyelitis/Chronic fatigue syndrome), a disease that can be very disabling for people and can last life-long in many. Dr. Walker was honored for her efforts to improve awareness and treatment of ME/CFS and to better understand the overlap between Long COVID and ME/CFS. Learn about #MEAction.

Congratulations to Emory GIM Faculty nominated by their colleagues and learners and recognized on Educators Day by the School of Medicine STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Ms. Laquanda Jackson During Staff Appreciation Week, Ms. Laquanda Jackson, Administrative Manager for the Division of General Internal Medicine, was spotlighted by the School of Medicine. What do you love most about your job? My unwavering dedication to Emory, demonstrated through my 31 years of service, has not only been a personal journey but also a testament to the wonderful people here. Working in academia requires a team of professionals who are hardworking, dedicated, and show compassion and empathy when needed. Describe your path to Emory and your current role. I was laid off from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) when President Clinton entered office in 1993. Dr. Schonberger was so impressed with my work at the CDC that he recommended me to interview with Dr. Henry Kahn at Emory University. I became a secretary in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine in 1993. I was promoted to Administrative Assistant in 1996 and started working with the Student Programs Family Medicine Course in 2005 under the leadership of Dr. Michael Lane. With the leadership of Dr. Joanne Williams in 2007, the Family Medicine Course was revamped to OPEX (Outpatient Experience) for first-year medical students to focus on understanding the relationship between the patient, the doctor, the health care team, and the community. In 2012, OPEX moved to the Department of General Internal Medicine under the leadership of Dr. Bussey-Jones, where I continued to run the program under the current leadership of Dr. Pamela Vohra. In addition to working as program coordinator for OPEX, I support faculty in the general internal medicine department. In my 30 years at Emory University, I obtained a master’s degree in sociology from Georgia State University and finally became an Emory alum when I graduated with an MPH in 2023 from Rollins School of Public Health. What is the most interesting project you've worked on in your role? The most interesting project is the OPEX program, which I have worked on since its inception in 2007. Working on OPEX has extended my skills and knowledge. I have established collaborations with outside healthcare systems such as Kaiser, Veterans Affairs, Piedmont, WellStar and other community healthcare programs to extend preceptor services to students in those areas. I have also implemented and hosted a yearly Faculty Preceptor Appreciation Dinner that has expanded to include the Department of Pediatrics and Ambulatory Care. I have adapted to new technologies and learning management systems, such as moving to ACEMAPP, CANVAS, OASIS and 25 Live. Lastly, I have worked with the State of Georgia in submitting documentation to the Georgia Preceptor Tax Incentive Program, which was implemented in 2014 to provide tax incentives for physicians to precept medical students. What is one thing you wish others knew about your job/field? Working with medical students is not just a job but a joy and a privilege. Witnessing the growth and development of first-year medical students into proficient doctors is a truly rewarding experience. It reminds of the profound impact we can have on shaping the future of healthcare. Dr. Pam Vohra-Khullar says, "Ms. Laquanda Jackson has been working in the Division of General Internal Medicine (GIM) since 2012. She came to GIM from the Department of Family Medicine and celebrated 30 years with the School of Medicine (SOM) in July 2023. She has made many important contributions to GIM to support our team and initiatives. Her invaluable contributions have supported our large presence and multiple events at the Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting. She also facilitates the OPEX (Outpatient Experience) required course for first-year Emory medical students, working tirelessly to assign students to physician preceptors across the community, ensure good communication between preceptors and students, and implement programmatic updates. She is dedicated and passionate about her work, which is demonstrated by the daily tasks she does to ensure the success of the OPEX program and GIM. She is an inspiration to all who work with her."
Dr. Shelly Fluker was recently featured on the Curbsiders TEACH Podcast (Episode #38: Pearls from Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine). She was joined by Jen Olenik, MD, (University of Pennsylvania) and Carolyn Chan, MD, MHS, (University of Cincinnati College of Medicine) to discuss innovative educational techniques, including gamification and other strategies to engage learners, their favorite workshops on feedback literacy, reducing bias in didactics and assessment, remediation in clinical reasoning, and addressing professionalism with a growth mindset! The Urban Health Initiative's Sprouting Readers program was recently profiled by The Saporta Report. This is one of the many initiatives that Emory Urban Health Initiative, co-directed by Dr. Stacie Schmidt, supports. GIM faculty are welcome to volunteer and become honorary members of UHI. The research corner is a space to share research-related opportunities, tips, and more. Please email Dr. Saria Hassan with suggestions! GIM-Wide Monthly Research Meeting Thanks to all who attended our last monthly meeting! Next TWO Meetings: JULY and AUGUST cancelled. We will resume in September. Need project funding support?
Need a Master of Public Health student assistant?
Does my study need IRB review? Given much of the confusion around this topic after the November meeting, we have worked with the IRB to generate a step-by-step guide to help you answer this question. Please review the PowerPoint here which hopefully makes things somewhat more clear!
