MAPs are led by Pitt researchers and allow students to gain up to 4 credits in Fall & Spring working on projects that create new knowledge, inform action, and advance the public good. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until September 4th. • Cultural Preservation & VR Immersion MAP Community-Based Research Talk with Dr. Aakash GautamDr. Aakash Gautam from the School of Computing and Information is looking for undergraduate students of any major from the David C. Frederick Honors College to assist with three community-based research projects. Through these projects, you may learn to build software, conduct qualitative studies, analyze and manage data, analyze academic papers, and more. For-credit and paid positions are available. You can help this research go beyond the classroom to directly impact communities. Help incarcerated individuals reenter society, create apps for learning digital literacy, and educate communities about data literacy and civic engagement. A talk with Dr. Gautam will be held on Thursday, September 5th at 11:00 a.m. in Room 5317 - Sennott Square. Refreshments provided! Preserving Democracy - Lavish Gifts, Judicial Ethics and the U.S. Supreme CourtBrett Murphy, a Pitt graduate, was a key member of the ProPublica team that was awarded the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service Reporting and considered the highest honor in journalism. That team was recognized for its "groundbreaking and ambitious reporting that pierced the thick wall of secrecy surrounding the Supreme Court to reveal how a small group of politically influential billionaires wooed justices with lavish gifts and travel, pushing the Court to adopt its first code of conduct." Mr. Murphy returns to discuss that work and its impact with CNN's Katelyn Polantz, Emmy Award-winning reporter and also a Pitt graduate, and Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg. Join them on September 12th from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. in the Teplitz Memorial Courtroom on the ground floor of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. It will take place at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas from October 31st to November 2nd. Frederick Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh is proud to support the second annual "Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh" initiative curated by FHC’s Artist-in-Residence, Morgan Overton. The Envisioning a Just Pittsburgh initiative aims to bring together a diverse group of emerging and experienced artists who can depict their visions of justice, equality, and community resilience. The call is open to creators working in a wide range of media, including written and spoken word, visual art, performance, fiber art, and digital art. Artists are asked to submit their work by October 20th, 2024. Detailed submission guidelines and a link to the entry form can be found at https://pitt.ly/envision24.
