Motus Crowned Champs in Emotional Series Finale

David and Agnes Motu have etched their names further into Auckland bowls history, becoming the first pairing to win the Shade Systems Champ of Champs Mixed Pairs title twice after defeating Glen Eden 15-11 in last weekend's final.

The championships delivered plenty of quality bowls, with several matches going down to the final end and Glen Eden producing a strong run through the draw to earn their place in the decider.

The event was also marked by the sad passing of Carlton Cornwall bowler Barry Green. The bowls community came together to honour Barry, with a moment's silence observed before play resumed on Sunday, reflecting the respect and camaraderie that define our sport.

Off the green, New Lynn's Family Day welcomed close to 50 visitors, while the Bowl-a-500 competition again proved popular.

Family Fun a Winner at New Lynn

While the region's top club bowlers battled it out in the Shade Systems Champ of Champs Mixed Pairs, a different kind of action was unfolding at New Lynn Bowls.

Around 50 kiddies and family members from the local community, including one enthusiastic family who travelled from Albany, joined in the Family Roll Up Day, enjoying games, face painting, a sausage sizzle, giveaways, and plenty of fun. Many of the youngsters were also spotted watching the championship action with keen interest, getting a close-up look at bowls at its best.

A big thank you to Hannah Neville and young volunteer Lilly Wesche for looking after the families throughout the afternoon, and to the Shade Systems team for keeping everyone fed with a fantastic sausage sizzle.

The day proved a great success, with New Lynn Bowls excited to welcome three new family memberships as a result of the event – a wonderful outcome for both the club and the community.

Pt Chevalier Community Comes Together

By Krystal Stevens

Pt Chevalier Bowling Club's Family Fun Day on Saturday 13 June brought together local families, community groups, and supporters for a day filled with fun, connection, and fundraising.

The event exceeded all expectations. From face painting, croquet lessons, and screen printing to raffles, a White Elephant Sale, and a popular sausage sizzle, there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The day was all about giving back while raising funds for the club's future. Thanks to the incredible generosity of attendees, volunteers, donors, and supporters, approximately $4,000 was raised for the cause.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed their time, resources, and enthusiasm to make the day possible. The event was a wonderful celebration of local spirit and a reminder of the strong support that continues to surround the club.

Celebrating a Volunteer Champion

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, it’s awesome to see one of our own Melanie Swami being recognised for her dedication to supporting others that extends beyond the bowling green.

An Auckland 1–5 representative player and a valued member of Carlton Cornwall Bowls, Mel was recently featured by the Halberg Foundation as part of its Volunteer Voices series, recognising her contribution to the Halberg Games.

Mel volunteered across a range of roles during the Games, helping ensure athletes and their whānau were supported throughout the event. Her commitment is driven by a passion for supporting tamariki and rangatahi with disabilities and their families, and she even prioritised volunteering over other sporting commitments to be part of the experience.

Reflecting on her time at the Games, Mel said her favourite moments came from the track and swimming events, where she witnessed the determination, joy, and "I can do" attitude of every athlete.

"What I gave of my time is rewarded in three folds of determination, joy, and love abundantly."

Congratulations, Mel, and thank you for the incredible difference you continue to make in our community. Your generosity, energy, and commitment are an inspiration both on and off the green.
