From society & industryGerman paper industry records enormous growth in demandIn the digital performance report, the paper industry association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE makes its extensive statistics available online and makes the development of the industry transparent. It documents the performance of the German paper industry on the basis of numerous national and - for comparison - also international data. Following the virtual end of the lock down, the paper industry saw a huge increase in demand in 2021. However, the upswing was burdened by dramatic increases in energy, raw material and logistics costs. Paper, board, and cardboard production grew by a remarkable 8.3% across all grades in 2021, from 21.3 to 23.1 million tons. Industry sales increased significantly compared to 2020, from 12.6 billion euros by 22.8% to 15.5 billion euros. This also exceeded the figures for the pre-Corona year 2019. At that time, the industry had produced 22 million tons of paper, cardboard and paperboard and generated sales of 14.3 billion euros. ![]() The paper industry secures everyday life with its products and provides millions of people with sustainable packaging for food and medicines, essential hygiene products, paper for newspapers and magazines. For its production, it depends on a secure and affordable supply of electricity and gas. Overall, the paper industry, with its upstream and downstream stages, represents 522,000 employees, value added of 35 billion euros. and sales of 93 billion euros. What other figures lie behind Europe's largest national paper industry can be seen in the current performance report of the association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE "Papier 2022", available at https://www.papierindustrie.de/papier-2022. From the membershipHahnemühle: Apprentices plant trees for World Earth Day 20222000 trees were planted by the trainees of ZELLCHEMING company member Hahnemühle and 70 volunteers in one day for World Earth Day - 2022. In total, the paper manufacturer is planting 6000 Green Rooster trees with the "Mountain Forest Project" in the Harz Mountains - near the company's headquarters. "We have been involved with our Green Rooster initiative, which is unique in the paper industry, since 2008 and this year we are working with the oldest German and internationally recognized forest conversion project. Under the motto 'BUILDING UP against climate change', we are planting native trees such as sycamore maple and larch," says Bettina Scheerbarth, responsible for sustainability communications at Hahnemühle. ![]() Hahnemühle has joined forces with the "Bergwaldprojekt" tree planting initiative, which has been working since 1993 to protect, preserve and care for the forest and promote an understanding of the interrelationships in nature. The aim is to encourage a broad public to use natural resources in a way that is compatible with nature by planting in the forest ecosystem. For this purpose, the "Mountain Forest Project" is linked to internationally recognized and Gold Standard certified climate protection projects. Voith BlueLine stock preparation line: Minimized water and energy consumption at Palm paper millRecently, the BlueLine OCC stock preparation line customized by ZELLCHEMING member Voith for the paper manufacturer Papierfabrik Palm started operation. The plant in Aalen, southwest Germany, is considered one of the largest and most advanced in the world. As a result, Palm is now producing testliner and corrugating medium even more sustainably. The BlueLine OCC stock preparation line enables maximum yield of high-quality pulp from recovered paper. Its daily capacity is designed for 2,700 tons. With particularly low energy consumption and a comprehensive AquaLine Flex water management system, the stock preparation line at Palm sets industry standards for resource efficiency. "High quality and at the same time more sustainability through energy savings and resource efficiency - that's what we wanted to achieve with the new stock preparation system," says Dr. Andreas Haas, Head of Technical Planning at Palm. "Thanks to Voith's expertise, customized solution and professional implementation, we are achieving these goals." Resource efficiency is made possible by a combination of tried-and-tested subsystems, proven machinery, and modern automation. For example, the seamlessly coordinated BlueLine process eliminates the need for intermediate vats, additional tanks, and agitators, which often interrupt operations in conventional systems. This simplification saves pumps, piping and valves, and consequently the energy to operate them. Savings of up to 20% are possible compared to conventional systems. In addition, the new system also saves significant amounts of water. For this purpose, the complete AquaLine Flex water management system, including the wet-end process, was implemented. In combination with a special configuration of the disc filters, the process also ensures that only very clean filtrate enters the wastewater treatment system. As a result, the water management system does not require a primary clarifier. Palm also achieves greater efficiency through higher fiber yield during screening: thanks to its optimized machine housing, the IntegraScreen screen ensures constant flow and pressure conditions around the screen basket. This results in high levels of contaminant separation. In addition, the IntensaPulper ensures efficient and energy-saving pulping. The special geometry of the trough and the asymmetrical arrangement of the rotor create a flow pattern inside the IntensaPulper in which flow energy is converted into pulping efficiency. Here, energy savings of more than 20% can be achieved. In addition, the HiClean HCL5-I Cleaner enables a high inlet stock consistency, which is also reflected in low energy consumption. We are happy to welcome new members again this month! We welcome to the association ZELLCHEMING:
