Nobel laureate, John C. Mather, Giving a Free Lecture at Penn State on SaturdayJohn C. Mather will be giving the Ronald and Susan Friedman Endowed Lecture in Astronomy and Astrophysics on this Saturday, April 8, 2023 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be presented in 100 Thomas Building at the University Park campus. Dr. Mather earned the Nobel Prize in Physics, 2006 and served as the Lead Scientist for the award winning James Webb Space Telescope, and has served on many advisory groups including NASA. He will speak about his team's experiences designing this incredible telescope. Come early, stay late! For about an hour before and after the lecture, visit with Penn State scientists from the Astronomy and Astrophysics department in the courtyard outside the Thomas building. Fascinating, new images of space from the James Webb Space Telescope will be displayed to view and discuss! Dr. Mather will have his new book available for sale and signing, and Webb Space Telescope stickers and fact sheets direct from NASA will be available for free! Free parking in Eisenhower Parking deck. Penn State faculty, students, and staff with a valid parking permit can park for free. Camp RemindersThank you to all the families that registered children for our 2023 summer camps! We are looking forward to seeing you this summer, and we will email additional information about the individual camps about two weeks before their start date. Please be sure to check your email address used for registration closer to camp time. Cancellations: For families who need to cancel a camp due to a change in plans, please email our office at sciencecamps@science.psu.edu. According to the Science-U refund policy, cancellations made 14 days before the start date of a camp are entitled to a full refund less a $50 administrative fee. Cancellations made less than 14 days before a camp start date are not eligible for a refund. Wait lists: For families with campers on a wait list, we will contact you via email if a spot becomes availlable for a specific camp. If you accept the spot, the registration fee will be due within two weeks. Wait lists are ordered based upon the date and time of registration, so that those who registered early will have the first opportunity to be offered a vacated camp spot. At this time, wait lists have not started to move. Brain Freeze!Registration is now open for the STEM camp for high school students on the autism spectrum. In conjunction with the National Autism Conference, this free program is scheduled for July 31-August 3. While most of the program will be held at the Penn Stater Hotel and Conference Center, one of the days will feature a field trip to the University Park campus and of course, to the Berkey Creamery. Blast off for Sci-Fi Science!Penn State's chapter of Graduate Women in Science is inviting students in grades 6-8 to attend it's 7th annual Young Women in STEM (YWIS) Workshop! The date is Saturday, April 22, 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the cost is free! Parents can register their children at the link below.
