February 2022 New members strengthen advocacyEnergy Resources Aotearoa has proudly welcomed Genesis Energy and Methanex as new members, adding more weight to the organisation’s focus on the wider energy sector. “We’re proud to now represent a wide range of energy intensive businesses, from distributors and users to explorers and producers,” says Energy Resources Aotearoa chief executive John Carnegie. Genesis Energy is New Zealand’s largest energy retailer, providing 500,000 customers with electricity, LPG and natural gas. It generates electricity from renewable and thermal sources and also has a share in the Kupe oil and gas field. Methanex is New Zealand’s largest single energy user, using natural gas as feedstock to produce nearly 2 million tonnes of methanol every year from its production plants in Taranaki. Energy Resources Aotearoa members use around two thirds of natural gas used in New Zealand and provide around 90% of natural gas and oil produced here. Other new members in the last 12 months include A S Harrison & Co, Morrison Mallett, Oji Fibre Solutions, Powerco, SenateSHJ and Tamarind. Observer status with UNFCCCEnergy Resources Aotearoa is proud to announce we now have Observer Status with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This gives us the right to attend important events such as Conference of the Parties (COP) events. It reflects our commitment to the net zero transition and is an important endorsement of our involvement in developing good policy. Energy Skills Action Plan underwayApproximately 50 industry interviews will be conducted over the next five weeks to help with future skills planning. This work is the first phase of the Energy Skills Action Plan, which is a joint project between Energy Skills Aotearoa and Te Pūkenga (New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology). The interviews will be carried out by Energy Skills Aotearoa and the Taranaki Regional Skills Leadership Group (RSLG). The findings will help provide recommendations for an industry action plan, ensuring we have skilled energy people to support the transition to lower emissions. Energy Skills Industry Talent cornerThis year Energy Skills is showcasing talented energy professionals and their pathway into our sector. Our industry talent professional this month is Ashleigh Fromont, Hazard Risk Management Advisor at the National Emergency Management Agency. "Growing up in Taranaki, it was hard not to be intrigued by the planet and its powerful forces! "I graduated from the University of Auckland in 2017 with a Masters in Geophysics, and shortly afterwards had the privilege to work in the 24/7 National Geohazards Monitoring Centre at GNS Science. "In mid-2020 I took up a role at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), as a Hazard Risk Management Advisor, and on-call Duty Officer for national emergencies such as flood, earthquake and tsunami. Unfortunately, I have already seen plenty of action in the past nine months! "My role is about ensuring that science informs best practice emergency management, in all manner of things relating to resilience - from responding to emergencies, to reducing our risk to people and property in the first place. It is all about problem-solving, rich networks of people and striving to understand how science can be best integrated to benefit our communities. "It was attending the Energy Skills Student Programme at the New Zealand Petroleum Conference as a high school student that really sparked my interest not only in geoscience in particular, but especially how it interfaced with people. "Energy Skills also supported me in planning and coordinating my first field trip as a university student leader, taking 20+ students around Taranaki introducing them to the petroleum sector. This gave me a real chance to develop my leadership, connections and confidence as a young scientist."
