St. Francis Hospice Supports Patients and Loved Ones

Petra Ranches’ first action when working with new clients at St. Francis Hospice is to meet them and personalize their care.
Whether they need relief from physical, emotional or spiritual symptoms, the nurse practitioner’s goal with hospice care is to first understand the patients’ immediate needs, such as pain management, then help them reach any future goals.
“Each patient is different, so it is important to start with them,” she said.
Doctors recommend hospice care when they’ve explored all possible medical options or a terminal patient would like to stop treatment. Hospice care can take place in a patient’s home, at the St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii’s 12-bed inpatient facility in Nuuanu, or in a nursing or foster home. Read more...

Food Assistance Available Statewide

(sweet_tomato / Shutterstock.com)
From the Office for Social Ministry
If you’ve been affected by the federal government shutdown, Hawai‘i Foodbank is here to help.
With nearly 1 in 3 households in Hawai‘i already facing food insecurity, the shutdown adds new urgency for families, federal employees, active-duty military members and contractors who may be experiencing paycheck disruptions or distributions in other benefits and services. Whether you’re navigating a temporary furlough or facing longer-term uncertainty, you don’t have to go through it alone. Hawai‘i Foodbank and our partners are actively sourcing more food and expanding support to meet the growing need.
If you or someone you know needs help accessing food, we have a variety of existing food assistance opportunities, along with pop-up food distributions, available nearly every day of the week. We are so grateful for the ongoing support of our donors and to the Hawai’i State Government for coming together to make sure that no one in Hawai‘i goes hungry.
Upcoming ‘Ohana Produce Plus Distributions on O‘ahu
‘Ohana Produce Plus is a food distribution program where you can receive free groceries like fresh produce, assorted dry goods, nonperishable food items and other essentials. There are no income requirements for this program, and anyone can receive food at through ‘Ohana Produce Plus. Read more...

One ‘Ohana, One Hope: Feeding Hawai‘i with Faith and Compassion

From the Office for Social Ministry
“I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat.” — Matthew 25:35
These compelling gospel words reflecting the heart of social ministry hit home this month. Across our country and throughout Hawai ‘i, families worry how they will feed the hungry at their table. Parents skip meals so their children can eat. Kupuna stretch cans of soup to last the week. Working people are putting in the hours yet still facing empty cupboards. Now, because of the federal shutdown, many people face the threat of losing their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits—42 million nationwide, 1 of every 8 Americans, 40% are children, 40% are elderly or disabled--165,000 people in Hawai‘i alone. National Catholic Youth Conference, Nov 21
|
 |
|
This November, our young people are being invited into something truly special. For the first time, Pope Leo XIV will engage in a live digital dialogue with young people in the United States. This moment will take place during the 2025 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), and we want every young person in our diocese to have the opportunity to be part of it, whether attending in person or joining virtually. We encourage your parish or school to register and share the word of the NCYC Digital Experience, a free three-part journey that offers:
-
A live broadcast of the Papal Dialogue on Friday, November 21
-
An exclusive pre-event on November 11
-
Follow-up resources for schools, youth ministries, and families
Can’t join live? A same-day recording will be available to all who register, making it easy for any parish or family to participate on their own schedule. We know the Church is stronger when young people feel heard. This event offers a powerful opportunity to affirm their voices and strengthen their sense of belonging. Register your group today at NCYC.us/digitalexperience.

ʻOhana Mass, Nov 29
|
 |
|
Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “ʻOhana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “ʻOhana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 p.m. at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Saint Martin of Tours
316 or 336–397
Memorial - November 11
Saint Martin of Tours has been one of the most revered and loved saints in European history for two primary reasons: he lived a life of heroic sanctity, and someone wrote it all down. Sulpicius Severus is believed to have been a wealthy man who converted to Christianity through the ministry of Bishop Martin. He then became a priest, interviewed Bishop Martin before he died, and wrote a book about Martin’s incredible life. The book was copied over and over again and became one of the standard texts for religious and laity alike for many centuries. Numerous churches and monasteries bear Martin’s name as a result of his popularity. Read more...
