The conference programme delivered a range of daily sessions, with a mix of plenaries, symposiums and workshops. A variety of speakers presented the latest developments in diabetes treatment and discussed the most pressing and controversial areas relating to management. National Diabetes Inpatient Safety Audit highlights lack of insulin trainingThe latest National Diabetes Inpatient Safety Audit has revealed that only 72 per cent of healthcare providers are currently providing insulin training to staff. During the Diabetes UK Professional Conference (DUKPC) 2023, Dr Alistair Lumb, Consultant in Diabetes, presented the findings of the audit – a national review of the inpatient service provision in England and Wales against the 2020 GIRFT recommendations. Two recognised diabetes professors revealed the latest findings from the DiRECT intervention at the prestigious Diabetes UK Professional Conference (DUKPC) 2023. Professor Mike Lean, at the University of Glasgow, and Professor Roy Taylor MBE, at Newcastle University, gave delegates a first look at the results, showing that for some people it is possible to stay in remission for at least five years. People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during adolescence are likely to die a decade earlier than those who develop the condition later in life, two diabetes specialists have revealed. Professor Melanie Davies CBE, Professor of Diabetes Medicine at the University of Leicester and co-founder of the Leicester Diabetes Centre, highlighted the link between early-onset type 2 diabetes and a reduced life expectancy during her presentation at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference (DUKPC) 2023. Eli Lilly and Company has announced that tirzepatide (10 mg once-weekly and 15 mg once-weekly) achieved superior weight loss compared to placebo at 72 weeks of treatment, according to results from SURMOUNT-2. The study met both co-primary objectives and all key secondary objectives for tirzepatide compared to placebo for both estimands. New commissioning recommendations on blood glucose and ketone meters, testing strips and lancets have been published following a national assessment on the products. NHS England has released the new guidance after conducting a clinically led national assessment to better understand the products available and how they meet the needs of all people living with diabetes.
