Message from CEO

Hello Members,

Not long now until our Jobs Expo on September 1 at The Cube. Although we have a full house of Exhibitors, you can still register your vacancies and career opportunities so that they appear on the Digital Jobs Board at the Expo.  Please don’t let the opportunity to connect with your next superstar team member pass you by. This is also an opportunity to see the many exciting career options available to all of us in Wodonga. The diversity of options available to us here in the North East is something to truly be proud of!

As I covered last week, cybersecurity is a massive issue for all of us in this digitally connected age. Data breaches are reportable and penalties can be over $2 million for a first offence and many times more for repeated breaches. This is above and beyond the impact and risk to the reputation of your business. We want to help keep you informed and protected with this invaluable workshop brought to you by our partner Annette Rose of NBNCo.  Book your spot now and rest easier knowing that you have made the commitment to protect yourself, your business and your customers.

Another hot topic for our members is grant writing. One of the most commonly asked question by our Members is what is the best way to write a grant. No one has time to waste in this fast paced environment and we want to give you the best skills possible for whatever grant you are applying for. Did you know that we are proud to have a grant writing expert as part of our membership? Pat Grosse (Grant Guru as we like to call her!) is going to be running a Grants Writing workshop for our members and we couldn't be more excited for this opportunity. Pat is a highly regarded expert in this field and this workshop is tailored towards beginners in this space. Even though this workshop isn't until October we recommend that you book now as we are sure this one will sure to be sold out!

Another exciting event we are hosting in October is our Member’s Meeting where our members get an exclusive opportunity to meet and network with the new CEO of the City of Wodonga, Matt Hyde.

The final thing from me this week is just how much fun we are all having with the Gem Awards. The rivalry and competition between Squad and The Personnel Group has been the highlight of this event and we are happy to announce that they are neck and neck in the standings! Keep it up everyone and we hope to have more announcements next week about prizes and celebrations.

Have a great weekend everyone and keep on enjoying the fun and positivity of the #wodongagemawards

-Graham

Wellbeing with a Difference

Meditating Monday

The art of rock balancing is said to open up creative pathways in your brain. But potato balancing has been proven to actually provide a shortcut to enlightenment.

That’s why we found you, in nature (or your backyard), meditating near the balanced potato.

Turn over a new leaf

It’s time for the Great Wodonga Leaf Census! How many different kinds of leaves are in your backyard or at your office? Count them, then take a photo of one of each leaf arranged on the kitchen table or your desk.

Walking Wednesday

Go for a walk with someone. A friend, your dog, in a meeting.

Eat the rainbow

Did you know that adding color to your meals will help you live a longer, healthier life? Colorful fruits and vegetables can paint a beautiful picture of health because they contain phytonutrients, compounds that give plants their rich colors as well as their distinctive tastes and aromas.

Today we want you to eat the rainbow in a day. Take a photo of each of the colours and stitch together into a collage.

Variety is the spice of life

Variety is the spice of life. Studies have recently shown that we eat on average about 43 different types of food, most persons reporting between 20 and 60 total food items.  Try a new vegetable (or use one you haven’t for a while).

Australians have until 20 September 2022 to seek priority allocation of an .au direct domain name that matches their existing domain name.

Anyone with an Australian presence (including businesses, organisations and individuals) can now register a new category of domain name, known as .au direct. These shorter simpler domain names will end in simply ‘.au’ (e.g. mybusiness.au) and will complement existing namespaces such as ‘com.au’, ‘net.au’, ‘org.au’, ‘asn.au’, ‘id.au’, ‘gov.au’ and ‘edu.au’.

Existing domain name licence holders have been provided priority to register the .au direct equivalent of their domain names until 20 September 2022, after which domain names that have not been allocated will become available to the general public.

Six months to go until Victoria bans problematic single-use plastics from sale or supply across the state.

To reduce plastic pollution, Victoria is banning problematic single-use plastics from sale or supply from 1 February 2023. Victorian businesses are encouraged to start preparing for the ban now to help ease the transition.

What will be banned?

The ban includes single-use plastic:

  • drinking straws
  • cutlery (knives, forks, spoons, chopsticks, sporks, splades, food picks and sporks)
  • plates
  • drink-stirrers and sticks
  • cotton bud sticks
  • expanded polystyrene food and drink containers, including plates, cups, bowls, clam shells, covers and lids

The ban proposes that conventional, degradable and compostable plastics (including bioplastic and oxo-degradable materials) will be banned. Compostable plastics can still harm wildlife if they are littered and often require processing at a specialised compost facility to break down.

Visit vic.gov.au to learn more about the single-use plastics ban.

Small Business Ventilation Program extended

To reduce the risk of COVID-19, the Victorian Government’s Small Business Ventilation Program is offering support to small businesses to improve ventilation in areas accessible to customers.

Eligible public-facing small businesses can now apply for funding for equipment or works to improve ventilation. Under the program, support is available via a rebate or grant.

  • Ventilation Rebate: A $500 rebate for public facing small businesses to take immediate actions such as purchasing equipment or hiring a qualified tradesperson to undertake minor services to improve ventilation in areas accessible to customers.
  • Ventilation Grant: Matched grants from $1,000 to $5,000 to enable public facing small businesses who employ staff to invest in larger projects to improve ventilation such as building works, engaging professional services or equipment in areas accessible to customers.

Hi all,

Gem Awards are rocking and I have been enjoying all the photos.

I have been a little quiet of Late.  The COVID Fairy paid a visit and decided to take up residence in my house!  No fun with that!

Wodonga Gems Travelling in style.
