July 2019      News from Family & Preventive Medicine

Ted Johnson, MD, MPH

Just 55 Words
from the Chair:

Changes! Each August brings us further along the academic New Year. Learners start jobs, new supervisory roles, and new adventures. This month’s headline article introduces our department’s new vice chair of research, Dr. Mo Ali, who is also a new graduate. His public health background, mentorship, and investigative leadership roles will greatly benefit our department.

Transformative Research

Welcome our new Vice Chair of Research,
Mohammed K. Ali, MD, MSc, MBA!

As our Department grows in size and scope, we are making sure that our structure supports the work we want to achieve and adding a Vice Chair of Research was a top priority.

Dr. Ali, who just completed a residency in Family Medicine, brings expertise in public health  and implementation science to our growing research program. When asked about his vision for his new role, Dr. Ali replied, "I am especially excited about growing the culture of inquiry in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. We have a number of very talented faculty who could benefit from linkage to resources, opportunities, mentors, and networks so that they can produce impactful and fulfilling work. Some of my key goals to achieve this are to help faculty navigate the systems and facilitate more collaborative research, both within the department and across departments and schools at Emory.  Through the initiatives we have planned, the leadership of the department can support our faculty members in their academic journey, and in the process, we will expand Emory’s footprint and recognition as a leading research university."

Dr. Ali is an Associate Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health and Department of Epidemiology and in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cape Town (in South Africa) and completed master’s degrees in global health and cardiovascular medicine (from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom as a Rhodes Scholar) and business and management (from Emory University). He is board certified in Family Medicine. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles and 25 book chapters, editorials, and commentaries. His areas of interest include the application of epidemiology and implementation science as they relate to diabetes, cardiovascular health, and health services improvement. He co-directs a NIDDK-funded Center for Diabetes Translation Research and serves as a scientific advisor for the Division of Diabetes Translation at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has also led and contributed to reports commissioned by the World Bank, World Health Organization, and National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

Educational Investments for our future

The student and faculty leaders of the Family Medicine Interest Group would like to give a HUGE thank you to all the physicians and residents who volunteered at the Speed Networking and Dinner Event held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019. We were able to show first year medical students just a snapshot of the breadth of Family Medicine. Students had candid discussions with physicians about women’s health, community medicine, national organizations, research, residency, transgender medicine and underserved care and many, many more topics. We’d like to thank Dr. Megha Shah for her wonderful keynote presentation, Dr. Ted Johnson for always showing support for students and FMIG and the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians (GAFP) for sending so many representatives as well. All of our volunteers made a huge impact and this event gets better each year!

The Emory Family Medicine Residency Program was well-represented at the annual American Academy of Family Practice Resident and Medical Student Conference in Kansas City. Drs. Sarah Dupont, Ryan Smith, James Jo, and Leila Khoogar attended the meeting to recruit medical students to  apply for the Emory FMR program.

The Emory team also enjoyed local culture while they were in KC. Pictured below: The Emory FMR recruitment team sampling famous KC BBQ and checking out a KC Royals baseball game.

Being of Service

Emory hosts first PAEA Leadership Lab!

Emory was pleased to host the first Physician Assistant Education Association Leadership Lab the weekend of August 3-4.  This was a national meeting and the president of the PAEA as well as the chairs of the PAEA committees were in attendance.  Dr. Lund welcomed the attendees to Emory and several PA students from the class of 2020 took the attendees around Emory’s campus.  Jeremy Amayo, Emory alum and adjunct faculty, gave an express talk on the morning of August 4.

The PAEA described the event as a "resounding success" - your can read their summary of the event and see more pictures HERE. Congratulations to the PA program!

Evidence of our Awesomeness!

Dr. Jodie Guest was named as the Vice-Chair of the Department of Epidemiology beginning 8/1/19.  She will maintain her teaching and administrative responsibilities in the PA Program.

SOM Imagine, Innovate, and Impact (I3) Awards

Innovation is the cornerstone of the emerging SOM Strategic Plan and is key to all three SOM missions: research, education, and clinical care. A key innovation strategy is to promote interdisciplinary and cross-departmental and -divisional research, i.e., collaborations at the boundaries of disciplines or research requiring input from scientists, clinicians, and/or educators in diverse disciplines. Problems in biology, medicine, and education today are often so complex that such approaches are necessary to tackle them successfully. Often novel insights emerge only when you juxtapose individuals with deep but disparate expertise around a common goal. The SOM Imagine, Innovate and Impact (I3) Nexus Awards are soliciting proposals to spur interdisciplinary research projects that have the potential to impact health or generate biomedical knowledge. Proposals due 5:00 pm on September 15, 2019.

  • The I3 Nexus Research Awards will provide seed money to fundamental biological and translational investigators for obtaining sufficient data to ultimately develop external collaborative funding applications, and to investigators who may not otherwise engage in multi- and interdisciplinary research. The goal is to take programs to the level at which extramural funding may be pursued. These awards require interdisciplinary team collaboration, with at least one collaborator outside of the home department/division (within the SOM) who brings a different discipline, expertise, or methodology to the project.

Please Consider Participating in the
 All of Us Research Program

The Georgia CTSA recently partnered with the All of Us Research Program. All of Us is a health research program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Its goal is to help researchers better understand why people get sick or stay healthy. The mission of the All of Us Research Program is simple: to speed up health research and medical breakthroughs. To do this, All of Us is asking one million people from across the U.S. to share their health data and samples to build the one of the largest health database of its kind. You are invited to participate and share! To learn more about Georgia enrollment in the project through Emory, email: allofus@emory.edu or call 404-778-1284.
