Chandan Devireddy, MD, and Emory Heart team make history

We're proud to share that DOM faculty member and interventional cardiologist, Chandan Devireddy, MD, (Cardiology) and the Emory Heart team were recently featured by Emory Healthcare. On November 16, Dr. Devireddy, his patient, Olivia, and his team at Emory University Hospital Midtown successfully performed a groundbreaking minimally invasive procedure using the newly FDA-approved Paradise ultrasound balloon.

This procedure, called renal denervation, aims to lower the patient's severely high blood pressure without the need for additional medication. Although Emory has been studying this procedure for over a decade, it was unavailable outside of clinical trials until now. Olivia has recovered smoothly and was able to return home on the same day of the procedure.

Department of Medicine honors the passing of Gerald Staton, MD

It is with deep sorrow that we share the unexpected passing of our esteemed colleague, Gerald Staton, MD, an Emeritus Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Dr. Staton came to Emory in 1981 as an Instructor of Medicine, where he taught medical students, housestaff, and pulmonary fellows for more than 30 years.

Many in the Department of Medicine were privileged to know Dr. Staton intimately, as he stood as one of the most cherished and longest-serving faculty members in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Previously, he served as the Medical Director of the Long Term Acute Care Hospital of Wesley Woods Center and was head of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Emory Crawford Long Hospital, now Emory University Hospital Midtown. He also served as the Division Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine within the Department of Medicine and has held leadership roles in several state and national organizations.

The Department of Medicine sends our sincere condolences to Gerry's wife, Debra, and their entire family during this difficult time. Please join us in remembering the extraordinary life and contributions of Dr. Gerald Staton, a beacon of knowledge, compassion, and dedication to the field of medicine, particularly to Emory University and the Department of Medicine.
