Emory FIRST Faculty Profile Spring Cleaning

Attention, all faculty members:
It's time for spring cleaning of your Emory FIRST Profile!

When was the last time you dusted off your Faculty profile, updated your headshot, or added new research or publications to your Emory First faculty profile? This spring, take a moment to update and add to your profile. Remember, it is the public-facing representation for all that you do here at Emory, and both the DOM and SOM communications teams link to your profile whenever you are mentioned in any of our communications.

The headshots, bio, and other information in your faculty profile are used in our articles and also feed throughout the SOM, DOM, and division webpages. To ensure we are sharing the most up-to-date information, we recommend routine updates to your profile. We have created the following website to answer any questions and provide you with detailed instructions. Please ensure that any data on your profile page is appropriate to share publicly (please don’t include personal cell phone numbers). 

Updating your profile is as easy as counting to five and only takes a few minutes: 

  1. Upload a professional headshot: Upload your most recent high-quality headshot by clicking on your empty or old profile photo.
  2. Check Information on your education credentials, such as your college, medical school, etc.
  3. Update your Academic appointments or your true academic title (Instructor, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Professor of Medicine, etc.) Be sure to include your department, division, and any Clinical Distinction titles in this section.
  4. ACCEPT or REJECT Publications curated by the University library.
  5. Don't forget to connect your ORCID ID for easier publication updates!

Raymond Kim, MD, named Division of Digestive Diseases Clinical Director

Raymond Kim, MD, has been named the Clinical Director at Emory University School of Medicine’s nationally accredited Division of Digestive Diseases. He will officially start with the Department of Medicine this August. Dr. Kim is a board-certified gastroenterologist and accomplished endoscopist, widely recognized for his expertise in complex therapeutic procedures and his commitment to clinical innovation.

Before joining Emory, Dr. Kim served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and as Head of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology at the University of Maryland Midtown Campus.

Dr. Kim is also a dedicated educator, having received multiple “Faculty Teacher of the Year” awards for his outstanding mentorship of fellows and residents. At the national level, he advises the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) through his involvement with both the CPT Editorial Panel and the RUC meetings, advocating for accurate coding and reimbursement structures in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Division of Rheumatology Walks for Lupus Awareness

On Saturday, April 26, the Division of Rheumatology and Emory community members participated in the 2025 Walk to End Lupus Now as the Emory Team. Our team raised an incredible $10,560 for the Lupus Foundation Association GA Chapter, which provides resources for people with lupus here in Georgia.

"A heartfelt thank you to all who supported our Emory Lupus LFA Walk Team in person and virtually! Our Lupus community gave us incredible attention and regard. A lively spirit, energy, and connectedness dominated this event! Members of our team were moved to help lead the dance exercise event start! And to our delightful surprise, we discovered the talented Emory Lupus Dance Squad among us," shares Charmayne M. Dunlop-Thomas, MS, MPH, Director of Research Projects.

"Take Steps Walk" with the Division of Digestive Diseases

Outstanding job to the Division of Digestive Diseases on their recent participation in the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation - Atlanta Takes Step Walk on Saturday, April 26. Our faculty, trainees, and staff showed up to give back to the community. 

This walk is the foundation's largest, most impactful fundraising event to raise funds to accelerate research, advance treatments, and provide programs and support to improve the quality of life for those living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Jeff Sands, MD | Division of Renal Medicine

Outstanding job to Jeff Sands, MD, Juha P. Kokko Professor Emeritus in the Division of Renal Medicine, on receiving the Robert W. Berliner Award from the American Physiological Society Renal Section. The award recognizes distinguished lifetime achievement in renal physiological research by a living scientist. 

APS shared the following on Dr. Sands' profound impact on renal medicine, and why he was selected for their highest honor.

"Dr. Sands is one of the world’s experts on defining the physiology of urea transporters, aquaporins, and the urine concentrating mechanisms. He has contributed to over 261 publications. Building from his research endeavors he is a Founder and Chief Medical Officer of NephroDI Therapeutics. NephroDI Therapeutics is developing a small molecule therapeutic for congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, which is a pediatric orphan disease. He is a highly respected researcher, clinician, educator, and leader."

Frances Eun-Hyung Lee, MD | Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine

Congratulations to Frances Eun-Hyung Lee, MD (Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine), who was officially inducted into the Association of American Physicians (AAP) on Saturday, April 26.

Election to the AAP is an honor extended to physicians with outstanding credentials in basic or translational biomedical research and is limited to 70 people per year. Membership is an indication of the preeminence and the highest caliber of physician‐led science accomplishments and scientific leadership.

Academic Internal Medicine Week |  April 6–9, 2025

Sponsored by the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), Academic Internal Medicine Week is the premier conference for faculty and staff in departments of internal medicine at medical schools and teaching hospitals. AIMW25 was held April 6–9, 2025, in New Orleans with great representation from Emory DOM divisions General Internal Medicine (GIM), Hospital Medicine (HM), and Infectious Diseases (ID).

Emory DOM faculty, staff, chief residents (CR), and trainees presented workshops and posters, and spoke at plenary sessions and round tables. Academic Internal Medicine Weeks offers a full range of session types and topics for seasoned professionals, mid-careerists, and those new in their roles.

Emory Digestive Disease Initiative Symposium | April 10

Emory Digestive Disease Initiative (EDDI) hosted its annual Shanthi V. Sitaraman EDDI Lecture on Thursday, April 10. It was an excellent event with participation across the Division of Digestive Diseases and our partners at Georgia Tech, Georgia State, and Morehouse School of Medicine, bringing together GI-focused clinicians and scientists in Atlanta.

It was a day of networking and learning with a special keynote presentation from Ophir Klein, MD, PhD, Professor of Pediatrics at Cedars-Sinai. He presented a lecture titled "Development and Repair in Gastrointestinal Epithelia."

Atlanta POCUS 2025
Thursday, November 6– Friday, November 7 | Miller Ward Alumni House

Save the Date for POCUS 2025! This conference is supported by Emory's Division of Hospital Medicine and is one of only seven courses approved by the Society of Hospital Medicine and American College of Chest Physicians, nationally as a course for their certificate of completion program for POCUS.

The course provides attendees with hands-on training in a 2:1 learner-to-faculty ratio, didactics on POCUS for various organ systems, and clinical integration of POCUS into practice.

SOM P4 - Pivot, Proposal, and Planning Program 

Deadline: Rolling | Proposals accepted by the last business day of each month at 5 p.m.

This new pivot program provides seed funding to Principal Investigators (PIs) in the School of Medicine who are looking to reshape their research to better align with new funding priorities at federal agencies. This RFA is only for proposals from PIs whose funding was terminated due to changes in federal funding priorities and who need to pivot to new research areas.
