SFO Outlines Plans to Rehabilitate Runway 28LRepaving of runway will involve eight weekend closures from March to June 2017 SFO has started repaving Runway 28L, one of two runways used primarily for arriving flights. Construction of Taxiway F2 and enhancements to Taxiway S are included in this project and will improve operational efficiency of Runway 28L. Scope of project
Weekend Runway Closures While much of the work will occur during overnight hours, a series of eight (8) weekend closures of Runway 28L will be required to complete the work. This will affect normal operations and some delays may occur during weekend closures. The Airport has worked with airlines and the FAA to develop a schedule that will minimize delays by maximizing construction productivity with closure periods that are least impactful to operations. SFO Shatters Annual Traffic Record with 53.1 Million Passengers in 2016
Double-digit gains in international traffic help drive milestone achievement SFO announced a new all-time record for traffic, serving 53,106,505 passengers in 2016. This achievement eclipses the milestone of 50 million passengers set in 2015, and represents the seventh straight year of passenger traffic growth at SFO. Overall traffic grew by 6.1% year-over-year, which included double-digit growth in international passenger traffic. Double-digit growth in international traffic
SFO posted a 10% increase in international traffic in 2016. Gains included new international airlines at SFO, including the Icelandic low-cost airline WOW, Fiji Airways, and Volaris, the second-largest airline in Mexico. In addition, United Airlines launched three new international destinations from SFO in 2016, including first-ever nonstop flights from SFO to Tel Aviv and two new cities in China: X’ian and Hangzhou. China Eastern also added the first nonstop service to Quingdao. With these gains, SFO now serves more cities in China than any other airport in the Americas. In its most recent economic impact study, SFO continues to make a significant contribution to Bay Area economies. Highlights from the report include:
In March 2016, the International Trade Administration, an agency of the Department of Commerce, reported that SFO experienced the highest rate of international passenger traffic growth of any airport in the United States for 2015. According to statistics, SFO posted a 9% increase in international travelers, ahead of other major international gateway airports such as New York-JFK, LAX, and Miami. SFO exceeded these figures with a 10% traffic gain in 2016.

Stepping Out: Shoes in World CulturesThroughout world cultures, an incredible diversity exists among footwear. In the most utilitarian sense, shoes and sandals simply protect feet; hence, practical concerns have long driven shoe design. Indian padukas, or toe-knob sandals, elevate feet above the sun-scorched ground while offering protection from debris. In the Arctic regions, sheltering feet from the cold, harsh climate is paramount. Inuit women in parts of Canada and Alaska continue to craft boots from caribou and sealskins, which keep feet warm and dry. Other shoes were fabricated for specific purposes, such as horseback riding. From the 1860s to 1890, cowboys on horseback drove cattle from Texas to the stockyards of Kansas. Cowboy boots were crafted specifically for their journeys. During the 1870s, athletic footwear began to be offered for sports and leisure activities, such as tennis. The invention of vulcanized rubber in the nineteenth century made these new, rubber-soled sneakers possible. Decorative ornamentation appears on even the most pragmatic footwear. As with shoe height, adornment might signify a person’s prominent position in society. Some decorative shoes are intended for festive occasions, such as weddings, when historically many Dutch and French villagers wore their most colorful, painted wooden clogs. Western wedding shoes, early basketball sneakers, beaded moccasins, European clogs, Chinese children’s shoes, and Japanese geta are a few of the many shoes featured in this exhibition. Stepping Out: Shoes in World Cultures is located pre-security in the International Terminal Main Hall Departures Lobby. It is on view to all airport visitors through October 22, 2017. There is no charge to view the exhibition.
SFO Receives 2017 Acterra Award for SustainabilityAirport honored with top award for all-encompassing environmental achievements Acterra, a non-profit organization in Silicon Valley dedicated to the promotion of a healthy and sustainable planet, has announced the selection of SFO for their top sustainability award for 2017, the Acterra Business Environmental Award. In the Large Organization category, SFO was honored with the Acterra Award for Sustainability. In its announcement, Acterra cited SFO as a nationally-recognized sustainability leader in the aviation industry for its history of climate action and sustainability reporting. “As an industry leader in sustainability efforts, we continue to set aggressive goals for our contributions to the environment, including targets to achieve zero emissions, zero waste and zero net energy,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “We are truly honored to be recognized by the respected staff of Acterra for our achievements.” Despite its status as one of the fastest-growing airports in the United States, SFO has achieved significant success in reducing its carbon footprint. Since 1990, the Airport has reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from airport-controlled operations by 38%, already far exceeding a City and County of San Francisco goal of 25% reduction by 2017. SFO has also reduced energy consumption by almost 11,000 megawatt-hours per year, and improved 558 acres of wetlands throughout the Bay Area. SFO has been recognized on multiple occasions for contributions in the field of environmental sustainability. In 2013 Airports Council International (ACI), the foremost advocate for airport operators worldwide, recognized SFO for its Climate Action Plan, which outlines a variety of efforts intended to reduce GHG emissions related to airport operations. The following year, ACI honored SFO for its Recovery Action Plan, which ensures the protection of two endangered species on a 180-acre undeveloped area of the Airport. In 2016, SFO was awarded Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation by ACI, becoming the first airport in California and only the second in North America certified at this level. For more information, please visit: www.flysfo.com/environment/overview. The Acterra Business Environmental Awards is one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s oldest and most prestigious environmental recognition programs. Initiated in 1990, it is highly regarded among award programs due to its rigorous application and judging process.
