Bishop' Homily for the Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time

(faizol musa / Shutterstock.com)

[St. Anthony Church, Wailuku]

I remember going out to dinner with some parishioners from Mexico. The first man ordered a steak, and the waitress asked how he wanted it cooked. She asked if he would like to have one of three sauces accompany the steak. She asked if he wanted French fries, mashed potatoes, or a baked potato, and when he said, “Baked potato,” she asked if he wanted butter or sour cream, bacon bits and chives. Then she asked if he wanted soup or salad, and when he chose salad, she asked what kind of dressing he wanted on the salad. The others at the table found all of this very amusing, and after the waitress left, then began to laugh. They said to me, “Father, in Mexico if you order a steak, you get a steak. It is prepared the way the cook decides to prepare it, and the cook decides what will accompany it. You don’t get all the choices that are available here!”

We live in a culture with many choices, and I think today’s Scripture readings speak of choices. Read more...

HOPE Services Responds to Hurricane Hone with Help for Unsheltered Residents

(Video screenshot courtsey of Hope Services Hawaii)

From Hope Services Hawaii

Hope Services Hawaii conducted an outreach mission early Saturday afternoon to help unsheltered Hilo residents prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Hone.

After attending a Civil Defense briefing earlier in the day, Hope CEO Brandee Menino and her agency set out in groups of two and three and fanned out across Hilo. The teams offered rides to the storm shelter operated by the County of Hawaii and the American Red Cross, which was located at the Waiakea High School Gym.

The agency also distributed supplies to those who preferred to weather the storm outdoors.

While Menino was in the Civil Defense briefing, Hope’s outreach team leader Carrie Hoʻopiʻi and staff were out shopping for extra supplies. “We were getting tarps, food, water, flashlights, ponchos, bandages, towels, dog food–anything to help them ride out the storm in safety, and hopefully make it a little more comfortable,” Hoʻopiʻi said. A New Place to Call Home

Hawaii Catholic Herald

Sacred Hearts School, the Lahaina school largely destroyed by last year’s historic wildfire, marked the next step in its journey of recovery and resilience Aug. 2 as its temporary campus in Kaanapali was formally blessed — just in time for the new year to begin three days later.

Scores of attendees sat beneath large tents set up in what will become the school’s outdoor recreation area, just one of many things that had been sorely missed when the school relocated to Sacred Hearts Mission Church in Kapalua.

Students who had to learn in tents set up on the grounds of the mission church now report to brightly decorated classrooms complete with air conditioning. A central pathway features grassy places to gather, and portable units house offices, restrooms and more classrooms. Read more...

God Walks with His People

From the Office for Social Ministry

God not only walks with his people, but also within them, in the sense that he identifies himself with men and women on their journey through history, particularly with the least, the poor and the marginalized. - Pope Francis Message to the 110th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, 2024

“God walks with his people” is the theme of this year’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) which will take place on September 29, 2024. Ten days later the 2024 session of the worldwide Synod of the Catholic Church will begin in Rome on October 10. Pope Francis message to WDMR emphasizes “the synodal dimension allows the Church to rediscover its itinerant nature, as the People of God journeying through history on pilgrimage, “migrating”, we could say, toward the Kingdom of Heaven. Likewise, it is possible to see in the migrants of our time, as in those of every age, a living image of God’s people on their way to the eternal homeland.” Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Monica
c. 332–387
Solemnity – August 27

Saint Monica, whom we honor today, was the mother of one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church: Saint Augustine. Monica was most likely born in Thagaste, present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria, North Africa, and was a member of the Berber tribe, a diverse group of peoples indigenous to North Africa prior to the arrival of the Arabs. Thagaste was then part of the Roman Empire, which had legalized Christianity just twenty years before Monica was born. She was raised in a Christian home and became quite devout. Read more...
