Upcoming May Mixer

Next month, Green Mountain Research Insitute (GMRI) will host the Chamber & Economic Development of the Rutland Region's May Mixer. 

GMRI is Rutland, Vermont's only independent clinical research site, working with volunteers to perform numerous FDA-supervised clinical studies with the hope to improve medical care & treatments, and assist some of the world's finest pharmaceutical companies uncover better options for healthcare.

The mixer on May 9, from 5:00-7:00 PM will include tours of the institute and our usual fun including raffles and networking. GMRI is located at 198 N Main Street Suite C5 on the Second Floor.

Finance and Compliance Manager Open Position

The Chamber & Economic Development of the Rutland Region is hiring a Finance and Compliance Manager.

The basic function of the position is to support the Executive Director with a specific focus on the duties and responsibilities outlined below. The Finance and Compliance Manager is an exempt salaried position located in Rutland County. Professional development and travel may be required, and evening meetings may occur in addition to standard working hours. The Executive Director provides supervision and regular and ongoing feedback.

Some characteristic duties and responsibilities include overseeing and implementing all State and Federal financial compliance requirements, refining and implementing strategies of the organizations, and being responsible for audits, budgeting, accounting services, payroll, bank accounts, and among many other tasks.

LaunchVT Selects Rutland Startup as Cohort

LaunchVT is the business accelerator of the Lake Champlain Chamber. For the first time, most of the eight startups in the group are from outside Chittenden County. 

Tacitly, is a startup from Rutland, founded by Jeff Dejarnette, Bill Kuker, and Luke Kosby, is a virtual reality platform to train traveling nurses in hospitals. It provides virtual-reality crash carts, like the ones used in emergency departments and other parts of a hospital when patients need urgent lifesaving measures. The traveling nurses can use the virtual-reality crash carts to become acquainted with the configurations of crash carts in each hospital.

Vermont Farmer's Food Center Receives Grant and Launches Online Market

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets (VAAFM) announced a second list of grant awards from a new competitive round of Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) funding. Approximately $200,000 will be awarded to nine organizations that have diverse projects to purchase from socially disadvantaged Vermont farmers and producers and distribute to underserved community members across the state. Projects will focus on increasing equity and cultivating new relationships between local growers and entities providing food to their neighbors. Projects will begin this spring and run for one year across 6 Vermont counties. 

The Vermont Farmer’s Food Center (VFFC) in Rutland received $10,288 to expand their Farmacy’s geographic service area to increase food shares to rural Community Health Clinics. 

VFFC also launched an Online Market where fresh produce, locally made products, and restaurant-prepared meals are available year-round! Check out what’s new each week and shop online for pick up or delivery! 

Looking for a way to support workplace wellness? Employers can purchase discount codes to be used by employees on their individual orders or seasonal assortment bags can be purchased and delivered to the worksite. With a newly acquired, refrigerated van, funded by a Food Hub Infrastructure grant from the VAAFM, orders can be conveniently delivered to workplace sites. The online store opens on Thursdays at 4 p.m. and is open until Monday at 10 a.m. each week. Orders placed are available for pick up or delivery on Wednesdays from 3-6 p.m. Need wholesale quantities of local foods?  Rutland area restaurants, businesses, schools, and institutions may purchase fresh produce and value-added products in larger quantities to meet their needs through the Online Market. Dept. of Homeland Security Hosting Lessons in Our Area

The BMAP team, part of the Department of Homeland Security, is traveling the country to host lessons about products that can be potentially used to create bombs and how to spot suspicious behavior. The BMAP team will be in Burlington this Thursday talking with businesses in sectors such as hardware, beauty, pool supply, and pharmacies to learn how some products can be used to create bombs and how to spot suspicious behavior.

Rutland Regional Planning Commission Receives Water Quality Improvement Grant

The Rutland Regional Planning Commission (RRPC) has announced that the Agency of Natural Resources, Department of Environmental Conservation, Water Quality Division has recently awarded RRPC a contract to administer water quality improvement programs to the 11 Regional Planning Commissions (RPCs) in the State of Vermont. The grant is funded through the 604B program of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and is intended to promote water quality planning and improvements.

Better Places Crowdfunding Campaign for "Reimagine Depot Park"

Rutland residents will soon be able to enjoy Reimagine Depot Park thanks to a recently launched crowdfunding campaign. The campaign is sponsored by the Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development’s Better Places program and led by Come Alive Outside.

The funds raised will enhance the current green space of Depot Park with five innovative “tulpi” seats, a musical instrument garden, and a small accessible table.

“Access to community gathering places is essential to the health, well-being, and prosperity of every family and every community,” said Department of Housing and Community Development Commissioner Josh Hanford. “The Rutland Depot Park will create a rich community gathering place that will enhance the lives of the residents and visitors of Rutland.”

If the campaign reaches its $10,000 goal by the deadline of June 3, 2023, “Reimagine Depot Park” will receive a matching grant of $20,000 from DHCD’s Better Places program.

Mike Solimano honored with SAMMY Leadership Award

Vermont’s Killington Resort, the largest ski and snowboard resort in Eastern North America and a POWDR company announces that Killington and Pico Resort Partners President and General Manager Mike Solimano has been named a recipient of the 2023 Sammy Leadership award. The 25th annual award honors innovative, inspiring, courageous, and passionate industry leaders making a difference locally and nationally. Recipients are determined based on nominations by members of the ski and snowboard industry, including many members of the Killington Team, who shared their thoughts.  

“I am humbled and honored to be recognized by Ski Area Management (SAM) with this award,” Solimano says. “The fact that I was nominated by the team here at Killington and Pico makes it even more prestigious and I’d also like to thank the entire management team at POWDR for believing in our vision and allowing Killington and Pico to grow in the right direction.  

Some of the attributes that earned Solimano included his openness to listening to feedback and enacting real change to improve the experience of working at and visiting The Beast. He is also no stranger to working on the front lines of the resort – often found boot fitting, bussing tables, or driving a shuttle bus.

Loan Forgiveness for Spring 2023 College Graduates

Last month, the Green Mountain Job & Retention Program launched in collaboration with The Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC).  This is the outcome of the Vermont Legislature's passing of S.11 in the 2022 Session .

In a nutshell, it's a $5000 loan forgiveness program for new graduates from Vermont colleges and universities that both live in Vermont and work for a Vermont company for 2 years.

Any spring 2023 graduate with a Bachelor's degree can apply. Recipients will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis based on regional, employer, and institutional distribution criteria, as long as funding is available. Applicants must submit proof of employment when applying. Employment will be verified with the Vermont-based employer at two points: after one year of employment and after the second year of employment.

Loans and Grants Available From the USDA Rural Energy for America Program

Rutland is an eligible area for the USDA Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Renewable Energy Systems and Energy Efficiency Improvement loan guarantee and grant offerings.

The program provides guaranteed loan financing and grant funding to agricultural producers and rural small businesses for renewable energy systems or to make energy efficiency improvements. Agricultural producers may also apply for new energy efficient equipment and new system loans for agricultural production and processing.

Rutland Young Professionals is an all-volunteer, all-inclusive organization focused on creating a vibrant Rutland Region and promoting all of the opportunities available here to young professionals near and far.
