Auckland announces Prem 2 squads Auckland Triples qualifying doneWell, that’s a wrap for the qualifying rounds of the Auckland Men’s & Women’s Triples. The Men played to quarter-finals while the Women signed off their Sunday's post section to the semi-finals stage – both will finish off this discipline at Finals Weekend on 1 & 2 April. A late change to the playing programme enabled Bowls Auckland to jointly run the Men’s & Women’s Triples. The change must have hit a sweet spot 264 bowlers signed up to compete. A bonus for the tournament was surely the fine weather. It was a warm weekend without rain - well mostly! Bowlers pitted their skills, firstly playing on artificial in qualifying and then moving to natural for post section. WOMEN'S TRIPLES The experienced side of Karen Hema, Linda Ralph & Sarah Childs from Carlton Cornwall fell to Royal Oak’s multi-generational family team of Robyn Fisher, Lee Singer & Nicole Singer, 9-15. Te Atatu’s home side of Robyn Reihana, Jenny Jones & Marion Hakaraia had a sting in their tail! The ‘get out of jail’ team hunkered down to secure their Finals spot defeating Jo McKenna, Jenny Stockford & Tessa Farley from Pt Chevalier, 20-3. In the other semi Estelle Hickey, Helen Blick & Jeanine Browne defeated Catherine Bien, Sue Curran & Paula Kempthorne, 20-14. Tino pai, wāhine. MEN'S TRIPLES In one quarter-final, Grant Keats, Peter Blick & Bernie Yeo from Carlton Cornwall were matched up against Bryce Mackie, Mike Bradshaw & James Gavin from Ellerslie. It was a game of two halves. In the first nine ends, CCB scored multiples to lead 18-7. The tide turned. Ellerslie steadied their resolve to peg back the deficit from the 12th. Ellerslie held CCB scoreless for the next five ends while they added 19 points to take the win 27-19. Men's teams to secure a semi-spot:

RIP Utu Vave1972 - 2023 Auckland's bowling community was shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Utu Vave on Tuesday morning at home. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife Pene and all his family. Utu was a great friend and teammate wherever he played bowls and was always ready to enjoy the social aspects of the game after a days play. He took up bowls with Onehunga Bowling Club over 10 years ago and enjoyed immediate success. At a 1-5 level, he was an Auckland representative and centre title winner. He was also a member of the 1-5 Year team that won the prestigious Canoe Cup Trophy two years in a row. More recently, he was a member of Royal Oak and Bridge Park, where he won several Club Championship titles and was a regular member of interclub teams. He will be sorely missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him. Please follow the Bridge Park and/or Royal Oak Facebook pages for funeral arrangements. -- Phil Taylor.
