Bishop's Homily for the Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

[St. Ann Church, Waihee (Installation of Pastor); St. Rita Church, Haiku (100th Anniversary of Parish); St. Anthony Church, Wailuku (Confirmation & First Communion)]

A catastrophic house fire. A devastating earthquake. A huge tsunami.  An unexpected lava flow. These are all very real situations that have turned people who had a comfortable, if not a luxurious, home into paupers. Unlike the man in the Gospel who was only thinking of himself, people who experience these disasters may be the most generous people you can imagine. Yet whatever materials possessions we own can be gone in an instant. This does not mean, of course, that we should not provide good housing for our families and the resources we need to live decent human lives. It simply reminds us that “vanity of vanities; all things are vanity.” And, of course, no matter how elaborate a funeral a person may have, they take nothing materials with them to their place of eternal (we hope!) rest.

But that does not mean that we should not invest in the future. On the contrary, Jesus urges us to do so always, but the treasure he is referring to is a treasure that we can take with us beyond the grave, a treasure that will last forever, that no disaster can destroy nor any thief steal. It is the treasure of faith in God. Read more...

Beware of Scammers

From the Office of the Bishop

If someone phones, texts, or emails you saying that the bishop or a member of clergy needs you to purchase gift cards for him, it is probably a scam, and you are advised not to respond.

A Century of Memories and Love

Submitted by St. Rita Parish
Hawaii Catholic Herald

1922 to 1950

In his 1978 book, “Pioneers of the Faith,” historian and Sacred Hearts Father Robert Schoofs wrote that the early Catholics of Portuguese, Filipino, Hawaiian, and Japanese ancestries living in the Haiku area worshipped in a small church in Pauwela or at Holy Rosary Church in Kuau. He credited Sacred Hearts Father James Beynes as the builder of St. Rita Church which was dedicated on Nov. 14, 1922, by Bishop Libert Boeynaems from Honolulu. (Other accounts recognize Father Jules Verhaeghe as the church founder). The Maui News reported that the dedication was followed by a concert and bazaar hosted by parishioners.

On June 1, 1923, the Catholic mission of Honolulu signed a 99-year lease for the land under the new church with the Maui Agricultural Company. St. Rita Church was first designated a mission church of Holy Rosary Church. Then sometime in the early 1940s, it became a mission of St. Joseph Church, Makawao. In 1944, the Maui Agricultural Company sold the lease to Takaichi Miyamoto. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Eusebius of Vercelli
Early Fourth Century – 371
Memorial - August 2

Eusebius was chosen bishop of the northern Italian city of Vercelli by popular acclaim in the 340s, even though he was an immigrant from the island of Sardinia. Twenty years after Eusebius’ death, the great Saint Ambrose, bishop of the nearby city of Milan, wrote to the Christians of Vercelli during a period of conflict in their diocese. Saint Ambrose’s letter survives and is valuable contemporary evidence of the great esteem in which Saint Eusebius was held by an equally great prelate. Saint Ambrose calls Eusebius “a great man.” Eusebius was great because of his close attachment to his city, to his priests, and to correct theology. Read more...
