Fellow Spotlight:
Mikaela Loach

Mikaela Loach is a Jamaican-British acclaimed author, climate justice organizer, and speaker, recognized as one of the most influential women in the UK climate movement by Forbes, Global Citizen, and BBC Woman’s Hour. She’s known for organizing and working with grassroots protests and support networks for climate activists. She’s been involved in Stop Cambo, Fossil Free Books, Resist Glencore and The UK Black Eco Feminist Collective. On her social media, she hosts a web journalism series called “Did You Know?” where she covers lesser-known climate justice initiatives in local communities. Her book Climate is Just the Start—an introduction to climate activism for young readers—released earlier this year.

You can read more about Mikaela on her website!

Christmas on the Border in Calais

After a holiday season spent volunteering at the border in Calais, Safina Center Community Organizing Fellow Mikaela Loach bore witness to the systemic and institutional challenges and dehumanization that refugees face every day. In a new article on our blog, she reflects on this experience and explores the grassroots movements trying to assist migrants.

"I wish that we will all understand the beauty, the power and the real practical meaning of solidarity in 2026. I honestly believe that if we all did, a better, freer, transformed world would already be here."

The 2026 Laysan Albatross Nesting Starts Off Strong

The 2026 nesting season for Kauai’s Laysan albatross is off to a strong start, with a record-breaking 457 nesting pairs settling on the island! Safina Center Conservationist-in-Residence Hob Osterlund shares details and updates on some returning nesters on our blog.

Looking Back at Jimmy Carter’s Anti-Consumption Legacy

One year after Jimmy Carter’s death, Safina Center Writer-in-Residence Paul Greenberg looks back at the former president’s stance on consumption and the legacy he left behind.

"James Earl Carter, a man of such dignity and kindness, was able for four short years to hold the reigns of power atop the most powerful nation on earth and sound out a warning,” Paul writes on our blog. “That his warnings stoked mostly laughter back then doubles back on us now"

Governor Kathy Hochul Signs New York's Horseshoe Crab Protection Act

After years (decades, actually) of campaigning from local organizations like Citizens Campaign For the Environment and Save Our Sound, NY Governor Kathy Hochul has finally signed the Horseshoe Protection Act into law! When the law takes full effect in 2029, the harvesting of horseshoe crabs—which are considered vulnerable to regional extinction—for commercial and biomedical purposes will be prohibited in New York.

We want to express our thanks to everyone who made an effort to advocate for this bill. Whether you attended meetups and press conferences or called and emailed legislators, this wouldn't have been possible without your help!
