The  Paul W. Seavey Distinguished Lectureship in General Internal Medicine features Helene Gayle, MD, MPH, President of Spelman College, in conversation with Daniele Fallin, PhD, Dean of Rollins School of Public Health, in person at the Miller-Ward House (5 pm: reception; 5:30-6:30 pm: fireside chat). Expect a dynamic conversation about HIV/AIDS, global & community health, and health disparities. Dr. Gayle was at CDC from 1984-1994 before serving as Director of the Bill and Melinda Gate Foundation, President and CEO of CARE, President and CEO of McKinsey Social Initiative, and CEO of the Chicago Community Trust.

WHEA Educational Leadership Fellowship
Applications Due Feb. 15

The WHEA Educational Leadership Fellowship Program is a 12-month program for health sciences educators who want to advance their educational leadership skills. The fellowship includes leadership development through monthly skills development workshops or interprofessional panel discussions, co-directorship duties in one of the WHEA programs, and will culminate in a capstone project. Fellows will receive 5% salary support and professional development funds. As part of 5% FTE, fellows are expected to dedicate 8 hours per month to fellowship activities.

Up to two (2) fellows will be selected each year based on a competitive application process, including completed application, personal statement, letter of support, and interviews.

20th Annual Hamilton E. Holmes Memorial Lecture

The Office of the Dean and the Office of Multicultural Affairs invites the entire community to participate in the 20th Annual Hamilton E Holmes Memorial Lecture (in person in the SOM with an online option). The program, I Am My Ancestor’s Wildest Dreams: A Discussion on Black Males in Medicine, will include voices from current and aspiring Black Male physicians. The Department of Medicine's Faculty Development Promotion and Tenure (P&T) Sub-Committee reviews all senior-level promotion packets as a first step in the promotion process. 
 
This CV Review Session includes a 20-minute one-on-one virtual coaching session with one of our P&T Committee members to help you enhance your preparation for future promotion to associate professor or professor. We highly encourage assistant and associate professors to take advantage of this session.

Jacobson recognized as global influential researcher!

 

Dr. Terry Jacobson studies elevated lipid levels in the blood (hyperlipidemia), nutrition and drug management of high cholesterol, coronary heart disease risk reduction, and translating cardiovascular prevention into practice. His career is focused on improving patient outcomes through behavioral counseling and implementing risk reduction strategies for clinicians.

 
 

Walker Secures Funding and Serves as Expert Witness for Congressional Committee!

 

Tiffany Walker and team received $5M in funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for a project entitled, “The Atlanta long COVID Collaborative: A multi-health system long COVID coordinated care model serving a diverse metropolitan population.”

Dr. Walker was also invited by Sen. Sanders' office to testify to the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions as an expert witness on Long COVID. She is witness #4 and her testimony begins at timestamp 2:06:30. Higgins receives IPECP funding!

 

Dr. Stacy Higgins received a FY24 Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) Project Award to fund medical students who are scheduled for their Adult Primary Care or Pediatrics clerkships in June to spend 1 week volunteering at the Emory Farmworker Project and student attendance at the Farmworkers Project this summer.

AIM Center Update

The faculty members of the GIM Academic Internal Medicine Center are currently involved in 32 active research and other scholarly projects. Topics that are being covered by the projects can be grouped into the categories of diabetes, lifestyle/wellness,  physician burnout, chronic kidney disease, improving patient care and medical education. There are members across all 3 AIM sites (1525, MOT, and the Seavey Clinic) as well as individuals across and external to Emory participating in these active projects.

Need project funding support?

  • Faculty can apply for up to $1000 for project support
  • Funds will be distributed on a rolling basis
  • Applications will be reviewed monthly
  • To access the application, click here

Need assistance from an MPH student?

  • MPH students can be very helpful on research projects as they bring skills they are learning in their program
  • MPH students are allowed to work up to 20 hours a week as long as the work fulfills one of their MPH program competencies
  • The application form will ask you what specific tasks you are looking for the student to do and which competencies the work will fulfill. Once approved we will work with you to post your position on the MPH student website.

  • Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis monthly
  • Please note that many students are looking now for Spring semester employment so the sooner you get your request in and approved the larger the pool of students you will have to choose from.

Does my study need IRB review?

Given much of the confusion around this topic after the November meeting, we have worked with the IRB to generate a step-by-step guide to help you answer this question. Please review the PowerPoint here which hopefully makes things somewhat more clear!
