A Look at May Highlights

A Message from Our CEO, Leanne Down

As May has drawn to a close, we’re proud to reflect on a month marked by momentum, collaboration, and progress. At the heart of it was the Future Avalon Summit, delivered in partnership with Wyndham City Council & Melbourne Avalon Airport—our largest and most impactful event to date—bringing together leaders and changemakers to focus on the future development of the Western Corridor.  This event gave attendees the opportunity to learn more about the Avalon Corridor Strategy and the opportunities that lay ahead for Wyndham businesses and community.

In this edition, we share updates from several Western Metropolitan Members of Parliament, including Sarah Connolly MP (Member for Laverton), Dylan Wight MP (Member for Tarneit), John Lister MP (Member for Point Cook), Mathew Hilakari MP (Member for Werribee), and Trung Luu MP (Liberal Member for Western Metropolitan Region and Shadow Assistant Minister for Police, Corrections and Crime Prevention). Each provides insight into their current priorities and the initiatives shaping their wards and the broader region.

In addition, the recent release of the 2025/26 State Budget has delivered news for the West, with investments committed to transport, health, education, and cost-of-living support. At the Committee, we remain focused on ensuring these investments translate into meaningful outcomes for Wyndham’s businesses and wider community, as part of our ongoing commitment to advancing social and economic wellbeing.

I trust you will find this newsletter engaging, offering a clear overview of the key developments and initiatives that have shaped the past month.

Happy reading

Future Avalon Summit

It was a pleasure to welcome such an engaged group of businesses and community leaders for a forward-thinking morning at our Future Avalon Summit in partnership with Wyndham City Council and Melbourne Avalon Airport.

The Avalon Corridor Strategy — developed in collaboration with Wyndham City Council, the City of Greater Geelong, and the Victorian Government — provides a long-term vision for integrated economic and infrastructure growth. It positions Avalon as a vital hub for transport, tourism, and industry, where investment and innovation can thrive. The strategy also highlighted how plans for this precinct are closely connected to Wyndham and its business community.

A special thank you to our outstanding speakers for sharing their diverse perspectives which highlighted how Avalon’s development will impact various sectors and reinforce the importance of collaboration across regions and industries.

As we look ahead, the Summit has made it clear: now is the time to engage, plan, and work together to ensure Avalon becomes a catalyst for opportunity.

Thank you once again for being part of this important initiative. We look forward to continuing the journey with you.

Sarah Connolly MP - Laverton District

Investment to Bemin Secondary College

Member for Laverton, Sarah Connolly MP, has welcomed a major investment in local education as part of the 2025 Victorian Budget, with $37 million allocated to deliver the next stage of works at Bemin Secondary College. This important expansion, set for completion in 2027, will help meet the needs of the rapidly growing Truganina community and ensure local families have access to high-quality secondary education close to home. The funding highlights the Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening education infrastructure in Melbourne’s west and providing long-term confidence in the availability of quality local schooling.

Dylan Wight MP - Tarneit District

State Budget 25/26

Member for Tarneit, Dylan Wight MP, has welcomed a strong investment in the 2024–25 Victorian State Budget, delivering key projects and support for the growing Tarneit community. This year’s budget includes significant funding across education, infrastructure, community services, and transport — all aimed at improving everyday life for local families. These local wins reflect the government’s commitment to meeting the needs of a rapidly expanding region and ensuring Tarneit continues to thrive.

  • $83.9M for Brinbeal Secondary
  • $10M shared investment for the Grange P-12
  • $120,000 for Hogans Rd Reserve Scoreboard
  • $20.05M shared investment for La Mana Pasifika Program
  • $200M shared investment for Wyndham Ring Road Stage 2
  • Funding to support Wyndham Law Courts and legal services
  • Funding for Community Support groups
  • New Bus Routes for Tarneit

Mathew Hilakari MP - Point Cook District

Wyndham Law Courts

Member for Point Cook, Mathew Hilakari MP, has welcomed a major investment in justice infrastructure as part of the 2025–26 Victorian Budget, with $114 million allocated to support the operational launch of the new Wyndham Law Courts. This funding will ensure the state-of-the-art facility is ready to serve the growing needs of Melbourne’s west, delivering more accessible and responsive legal services to the community.

Construction of the Wyndham Law Courts is nearing completion, with the facility set to open later this year. The investment will support the court’s operational readiness, including increased staffing and security across all court services, enhanced custody case management by Victoria Police, and upgrades to IT infrastructure. It also includes support for key legal services such as Victoria Legal Aid, Community Legal Services, the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, the Office of Public Prosecutions, and Djirra.

To further improve community access to the new justice precinct, upgrades will be made to bus Route 153 (Williams Landing Station – Werribee Station via Princes Highway), including increased service frequency and the relocation of the eastbound bus stop to better serve court users.

John Lister MP - Werribee District

Victorian State Budget

Member for Werribee District, John Lister MP, has welcomed this year’s Victorian State Budget, highlighting its strong focus on supporting families across the community. A key feature of the budget is the significant investment of over $200 million into state primary and secondary schools throughout Wyndham, reflecting the continued advocacy of local Labor Members of Parliament Dylan Wight, Sarah Connolly, and Matt Hilakari.

In addition to education, the budget outlines substantial commitments to transport and road infrastructure across the region. This includes increased train frequency on the Werribee line, the introduction of new bus routes and enhancements to existing services, and funding toward major road projects such as the Wyndham Ring Road.

Further supporting the community, the budget also delivers free public transport on weekends for seniors and free travel all week for people under 18.

The budget achieves these investments while maintaining fiscal responsibility, including the delivery of a cash surplus this financial year.

John Lister MP continues to maintain a strong connection with the Committee for Wyndham and remains committed to supporting the region’s growth and prosperity. He looks forward to engaging with members at upcoming initiatives and working together to deliver positive outcomes for the Wyndham community.

Trung Luu Liberal MP - Western Metropolitan Region

Victoria Police

Trung Luu, Liberal Member for Western Metropolitan Region and Shadow Assistant Minister for Police, Corrections and Crime Prevention, recently shared his concerns with the Committee for Wyndham regarding the State Budget’s $50 million reduction to the Victoria Police operational budget. He noted that staffing shortages and resource constraints are leading to reduced police station hours and service availability. Mr. Luu highlighted the potential broader impact on community safety and regional confidence, suggesting that adequate investment in policing and support services is not only essential for public safety but also for creating a stable environment that attracts investment and supports job creation across the Western suburbs.
