Hawaii Catholic Herald

The devastation wrought by the wildfires in West Maui last year is unmatched in recent history.

The death toll from the blaze that tore through Lahaina on Aug. 8, 2023, stands at 102. Thousands of people continue to struggle to find housing and other resources. Many families have been forced to move elsewhere in the state or to the mainland because staying proved too big a challenge.

Despite the immense challenges that persist, optimism for the future also endures.

It has to, said Toni Rojas, director of Maui disaster relief for the Hawaii Catholic Community Foundation — “for our survivors, our community and our island of Maui.” Read more...

Reflecting on "One Ohana"

(WiPhotoHunter / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

God himself is a community, that perfect community of love, three persons in one God and that is what we are called to be. We are never to be alone. We know that we are part of an Ohana –– that God is always a part of that family. God is always the One who calls us into that family.” - Bishop Larry Silva, from the One Ohana video series on the Sacraments.

Bishop Larry Silvaʻs 75th birthday in August provides an opportunity to reflect upon his years of loving service witnessing to Jesus in the Diocese of Honolulu. Over the last decade, the Office for Social Ministry has been blessed to participate in the production of the diocese’s award-winning “One Ohana” video series on the sacraments, which expressed some of  Bishopʻs Larry inspiring pastoral reflections. This Talk Story column will highlight some of his many memorable quotes from these videos.

The first of the “One Ohana” videos featured the sacrament of Baptism, in which Bishop Larry eloquently lifted up the vital connection of faith and family. He compared the joyful gift of a child’s birth to the experience of God’s beauty. Read more...

This session with presenters Paul & Sarah Jarzembowski will guide participants and facilitate dialogue around unpacking “moments of return” throughout the year, such as Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter, as well as weddings, baptisms, and funerals. We will also explore some less-obvious “moments” that reveal an overlooked abundance of occasions and opportunities upon which pastoral leaders, families, and concerned churchgoers can build. As Pope Francis notes, these “moments” can offer people “wellsprings of new life,” especially when we respond with intentionality, pastoral care, and a missionary spirit.

Saint of the Week

Saint Dominic
1170–1221
Memorial – August 8

Today’s saint came from a holy family. Dominic’s mother was later beatified, as was one brother who followed Dominic into the Order of Preachers. His other brother was a diocesan priest who lived in poverty and was devoted to the care of the poor and suffering. From the age of seven to fourteen, Dominic was educated under the guidance of his mother’s uncle, a priest. From fourteen to twenty-four, he attended the University of Palencia where he excelled in his studies. During his ten years at Palencia, Dominic was also deeply devoted to the poor. On one occasion, he sold all he had, including books he had copied by hand, to alleviate the suffering of those affected by a plague. Read more...
