UF Health neurosurgeon awarded $38 million grant to lead national stroke prevention trial

Brian Hoh, M.D., M.B.A., chair of the UF College of Medicine Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery, has received a $38 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to test two new prospective treatments for symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis, a leading cause of ischemic stroke worldwide.

The double-blinded, randomized clinical trial across 115 U.S. sites will include 1,683 participants, who each will be placed into one of three different medical treatment paths for comparison. The trial is scheduled to start this summer, with patient enrollment planned to begin in January 2022. Each participant will be followed for one year.

Remembering 9/11

Tomorrow will mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil, and many of us will stop to remember and pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives and the loved ones they left behind. As we commemorate this historical day that changed our way of life forever, let’s also remember that we are a strong nation of people who, when we stand united in spite of our differences, can meet any challenge.

For those who would like to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, you may join the city of Gainesville tomorrow at 8 a.m. for a special ceremony.

For 15 years, the UF Health Congenital Heart Center has offered patients of all ages comprehensive care for congenital heart disease and acquired heart diseases.

UF Health team develops technique to conserve oxygen during acute shortages
 
A Center for Safety, Simulation and Advanced Learning Technologies team conceived a novel way to prolong the life of oxygen cylinders by reducing oxygen waste. The technique involves intermittently interrupting oxygen flow from the cylinder during exhalation so oxygen flows only during inhalation.
