Word of Pope Francis’ death broke late in the evening on Easter Sunday, April 20, for the faithful in the Diocese of Honolulu. Many learned of the sad news on Easter Monday.
By then diocesan officials were already hard at work making plans for Hawaii to mourn Pope Francis, including sending out directives to parishes and creating a new website with information about the papacy.
Bishop Larry Silva released a statement late April 20: “After many prayers for his recovery, Pope Francis has passed to his eternal rest. How blessed is Pope Francis to have died on this Easter week, after dedicating his life and his papacy to proclaiming the Lord Jesus as alive and active in our world!” Read more... | | |

A Bridge to Life: Honoring Pope Francis’ Vision for the Church
In the spirit of Pope Francis, we are reminded that the Church is a place of mercy, of hope, and where everyone is welcomed and loved. His call echoes louder than ever in our world today, urging us to become a living reflection of God’s love for all people, especially those on the margins.
In a Vatican Easter message just before his passing, Pope Francis is quoted:
“Let the Church and the world rejoice, for today our hopes no longer come up against the wall of death, form the Lord has built us a bridge to life.” ~Pope Francis
The powerful image of this Easter message reminds us that Christ’s Resurrection is more than a promise—it is a path forward. A bridge over sorrow, division, and despair…leading us toward new life, healing, and unity.
We give thanks to God for Pope Francis, who in turn asks us to pray for the church.
As we walk this bridge together, may our parishes, communities, and hearts always be places where mercy flows freely, where hope is shared generously, and where all who enter feel truly seen, embraced, loved and forgiven.

How would you like to learn about demonic oppression and possession and the Christian Church’s theology around it. Spiritual warfare is real. Why not learn how real non-Hollywood movie exorcisms happen?
Join us in taking the mask off the demonic with the help of Catholic exorcist Fr. John Szada. He will teach us about demonic oppression, obsession and possession, how to distinguish demonic intrusion from mental illness, and what we can do to protect ourselves and others. Fr. Szada will share real stories about real people and real exorcisms. The evening will include time for Q&A. This event is open to the public, tickets are limited.

	Saint Peter Chanel1803–1841
 Memorial - April 28

Today’s saint, Saint Pierre Louis Marie Chanel (Peter), was the fifth of eight children. Peter’s father was later described as a good man, but also a man “more inclined to the bottle than to religion.” Peter’s uneducated mother was a strong Christian. As a youth, Peter worked as a shepherd on their sixty-five acre family farm. Their land had recently belonged to the Church but was confiscated by the state at the beginning of the French Revolution and sold to Peter’s father. Aware of this fact, Peter had a desire to make reparation for his family. By the end of his life he would do so, and more, by laying his life down as a priest-martyr on the tiny, remote, and barbaric island of Futuna, in the Pacific Ocean, Oceania. Read
