Back-to-back wins for Carlton Pair

Leif Selby and James Williams from Carlton Cornwall reigned supreme in last Sunday's National Champ of Champs Men’s Pairs Finals, defeating the local team from St Kilda, Murray Wilson and Owen Bennett 16-11. It was back-to-back wins for the men in yellow and black.

Both teams demonstrated their skills by delivering exciting bowls befitting a Finals match. Leif’s experience came to the fore by consistently executing key shots when required.

Leif and James qualified for Post Section, winning three from four matches. In the first round of Post Section, the Carlton Pairing defeated the strong Pairing of Lance Tasker and John O’Shea from Tauranga, 19-15.

Next up was their semi-final against Dean Drummond and Murray Glassey from Hastings. Another tightly fought match ensued with both Skips putting on a masterclass bowls show. Leif and James won, 19-12.

Auckland Bowls congratulates Leif and James on their achievement, and well done to Murray and Owen.

Carlton Cornwall's Women's Triples; Linda Ralph, Karen Hema and Lisa Prideaux head to Wellington this weekend.

Their first game is Friday at 8:00 am, where they meet Diane Patterson, Lesley Bourke & Deborah Garside from Whānganui.

We've got our fingers crossed, ladies - good luck and all the best.

We are getting down to the business end of WinterClub. The top of the ladder is looking a little congested as teams with the same number of points or not far off, enter Rounds 5-6. It's bound to be competitive bowls this Sunday - as one bowler said to us "bring it on!"

We hope you can get along to watch and support your team. Host clubs are Bridge Park, Epsom, Papatoetoe HC and Mt Eden. Good luck everyone and happy bowling!

Tomorrow evening Royal Oak Bowls is hosting a tribute night for Gary Fleming in honour of 53 years of loyal service to Onehunga Bowls and Royal Oak Bowls.

Gary is also a Life Member and past President of Auckland Bowls.

All the best for the evening, we're sure it will be a great night.

The other movie about lawns bowls!

Rarely seen in Aotearoa, we've obtained a copy of the other movie about lawn bowls! Directed by Mel Smith and featuring Paul Kay, Johnny Vegas, Vince Vaughn and James Cromwell (and quite a few famous cameos), a rebellious young British bowls player teams with another older and more traditional player to take on the Australian bowls team in National Lampoon's 'Blackball'. Based on a true story of Griff Sanders, who was thrown out of the Torquay Bowls Club for "improper conduct".

But is it any good? Here's what some had to say about it...

"English audiences will thoroughly enjoy the cruel humour, culture-based hilarity and in-joke casting; everyone else will wonder why the film was made at all."
"A full-on local crowd-pleaser, "Blackball" takes the genteel sport of, uh, lawn bowling and comes up with a shameless slice of Brit flag-waving comedy."
"A hackneyed portrait of zany British eccentrics whose limited appeal will presumably sink like a stone in the English Channel..."
"Funny unknown comedy that is a joy to watch every year."

Newest life member

Rocky Nook Bowls

Whakamihi (congratulations) to our newest Life Member, immediate Past President, Colin Marychurch, inducted at the 2022 AGM.

Colin has not only been a member in good standing for over 10 years but, over the last seven years, in particular, has played an integral part in the club's resurgence as Club President. He took over as President at a time when there was little interest in the role and has been an encouraging and steady presence on the Board since.

Colin is often the first at the club on match days and often the last to leave. He has uncomplainingly manned many a club BBQ, most recently has been an engaged and hard-working member of the Match Committee, as well as taking over the role of Greens Superintendent. He is also a proud ambassador for the club when playing away with many visitors and new members checking out Rocky Nook Bowls in recent years on his referral.

Colin is a club stalwart, having delivered outstanding service, always with a head for what is best for the club and as such, the Board had no hesitation in submitting him to the AGM for Life Membership.
