Fellow Spotlight:
Erik Callender

Erik Callender is a wildlife educator and herpetologist from New York. He is the creator and host of the children’s PBS television series Menghayati!, which takes the viewer around the world to learn about different animals, places, and cultures. His passion for education began In 2006, when he founded “Erik’s Reptile Edventures,” and began traveling to schools and events across the state to teach children about the animals he loves. He expanded his reach with distance learning programs, reaching students in Ranomafana, Madagascar, where he’d later found the country’s first environmental school. With the support from his fellowship, he filmed a second and third season of Menghayati! in New York, Costa Rica, and Panama.

You can read more about Erik on his website!

The Marred Fantasy of “Pristine Nature” in the Galápagos

“We cannot expect to experience an untouched wilderness that simply does not exist,” writes Safina Center Environmental Journalism Fellow Marlowe Starling in a new article on our blog. During a busy reporting expedition to the Galápagos, Marlowe saw bountiful wildlife amongst the developed streets of Santa Cruz. But she also witnessed the immense impact human development has had on these animals—particularly in the Galápagos Marine Reserve.
