Executive Corner| A message from Executive Director, Pamela C. Enslen

Greetings!

I hope you all are enjoying this lovely California spring weather.  Here at Cal LAW, April and May have been quite eventful. Our Advisory Board and staff participated in a two-day strategic planning retreat in April, working with outside facilitators at the Foundation for California Community Colleges Sacramento headquarters facilities.  The sessions were lively and productive, and resulted in several action items for the board and staff to work on through the remainder of 2022 and beyond. The Advisory Board and staff will meet again in June to discuss the results of the strategic planning and work on next steps in our efforts to make Cal LAW more impactful and responsive to the needs of our students, partners, and the legal system throughout the State of California.  As always, if any of you have questions or comments about the operation and impact of Cal LAW, please feel free to reach out to me directly at pchapmanenslen@foundationccc.org.

As Executive Director, I have evaluated our staffing needs and decided to fill two additional positions.   A search for a new Associate Director, Outreach and Implementation has already commenced.   The posting and job description may be found at this link here.  If you or any of your friends and colleagues are interested, please be sure applications are submitted as soon as possible!   I will also be posting a job description for a new administrative assistant position in the next few weeks, so watch out for that notice if you or someone you know has an interest.  Our mission and vision here at Cal LAW is exciting and impactful, and I would love to hear from anyone interested in joining us in this meaningful work.

Law Day with California LAW Pathways

Law Day, held annually on May 1, is a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Recognizing that no rights are more important and carefully guarded than those guaranteed by the United States Constitution, the national Law Day theme this year was: “Toward a more Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change.” In keeping with the important constitutional issues faced by people in California and around the nation, California LAW was proud to host a conversation on equitable healthcare at both the state and federal levels. We were privileged to have as presenters Lizette Mata, Senior Advisor to US Senator Alex Padilla, Jesse Melgar, Director of Engagement for the UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy’s California 100 Initiative, and Constitutional Law scholar and law school Dean James Alfini. The program was a far-reaching and insightful discussion of the state and federal governments' proposed legislative and rule-making powers and potential constitutional ramifications as they relate to providing fair and adequate access to healthcare for everyone in California and around the nation.
