Karinya News - October 2022

Dear Friends of Karinya

After all the happenings of September, we are actually almost at the end of October!

The image above is the commissioned artwork for the inaugural Karinya House Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).

The artist is Kathryn Williams, and we thank Kathryn for her reflections of Karinya House, which she has woven into this artwork.

You can read more about Kathryn and the art story in the RAP publication (link below) on our website. The Karinya House Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan was formally endorsed by Reconciliation Australia on 14 October 2022.

We look forward to continuing the Karinya House reconciliation journey, guided by the RAP.

Nations Connect played a significant part in helping us to develop our inaugural RAP.  We thank Jacob and the team for walking alongside and sharing their knowledge, wisdom and learning with us so generously. We also thank Reconciliation Australia for their support throughout the development of the Karinya House RAP.

Christmas is just around the corner....

As we head toward December 2022, we reflect on what has been a year of transition for Karinya House. In whatever way you celebrate this time of year, between the old year and the new year, and across the southern hemisphere summer, we invite you to ponder the women supported by our community, through Karinya House, who are seeking their new directions.

Last Christmas, we were able to match every woman we were walking alongside with a sponsor person/family.  The sponsor was given a description of the family unit and an outline of their unique circumstances to consider when purchasing gifts. If you are interested in being a sponsor, send an email and one of our Christmas Elves will be in touch. Alternatively, you may like to make a donation to Karinya House this Christmas.

More about the giving season is available at the link below.

The artwork, "Finding Your Direction", is a gift created with love from Stephanie Corkhill-Hyles (again!).

September - What a Month...

September featured our 25th Anniversary of services for women in the Canberra Region. The Karinya doors opened on 29th September 1997 and have been open ever since. Every day, 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, (366 in each leap year 😂).

In September 2022, we held a celebration Spring Gala Dinner attended by 360 fabulous Karinya villagers and supported in kind by many more generous Karinya partners (also villagers!). Whilst more of a celebration than a fundraising event, the evening did raise just over $26,000.

We held the 10th Mercy Walk for Women supported by 53 wonderful walkers, raising $10,074. Other donations in September, our Double your Impact month, totaled just over $31,000.  With the wonderful pledge of our 8 matched giving partners, all donations have been matched, dollar for dollar and then some, as all corporate partners have since confirmed their full pledge.

Amazing support from the Karinya Village.  Whilst we remain somewhat shy of our budget donor revenue for the 1st quarter, we remain hopeful as always of "getting there" by 30 June 2023!

Recent feedback through departure evaluation forms:

The best thing Karinya House did for me was: "Offering me all the support, connecting me to the right services and helping me get a place to call home for myself and my children. Thank you for all your amazing help, support and knowledge."

"A big thank you for all the support provided during a really stressful time in my life. I will forever be grateful for Karinya House." (This snippet was accompanied by the best photo of her little girl, rocking a Karinya gifted outfit and blanket, with a big smile on her face!).
