Featured Artist: Robert Tatin

LE MUSEE ROBERT TATIN,
Cossé-le-Vivien, Loire, France

Unlike most intuitive builders, Robert Tatin (1902–1983) had experienced some success as a ceramic artist before he purchased the derelict rural farmhouse of La Frénouse. After imaginatively restoring the house with the assistance of his wife Lise, Tatin went on to build a personal temple to the heavens, reflecting his unique beliefs, a mixture of ancient and New Age philosophies. A series of life-size sculptures representing Tatin’s own heroes stand along the “Avenue of the Giants” which leads to the open dragon’s mouth at the entrance to the walled compound.

Within, tall-standing sculptural structures representing the sun and moon look down on various figures, including those of Tatin and his wife, which are installed in arcades surrounding a central pool. Behind these are chambers that house Tatin’s paintings and other creations. Unlike a purely intuitive builder, Tatin had an overall scheme in mind and worked with some premeditation and planning.
