Many years of ministry in the South Pacific have profoundly impacted the life and spirituality of the Diocese of Honolulu’s next shepherd, who was formally appointed May 6 by Pope Leo XIV.

Jesuit Father Michael Thomas Tupou Castori, who had been rector of the Arrupe Jesuit Community at Seattle University, was appointed by the Holy Father as the sixth bishop of Honolulu May 6 at 12 p.m. Rome time — midnight Hawaii time. He was introduced to Diocese of Honolulu staff members, priests and deacons at 9 a.m. that morning by Bishop Larry Silva and Msgr. Gary Secor, vicar general of the diocese.

Bishop Silva prayed for the bishop-elect as the press conference got underway.

“I welcome this new shepherd for the Diocese of Honolulu,” Bishop Silva said. “I thank you for his willingness to say ‘yes’ to this responsibility, and I thank you for the ministry that lies ahead. May he be blessed, may he be a good shepherd, loving his people and leading them closer, always to you. May he experience much joy and much love in this, his new family.” Read more...

Early Stage Support Group starts June 13

From Catholic Charities Hawaii

Catholic Charities Hawaii (CCH) is inviting persons with early stage memory loss or other dementia symptoms to come together to learn, share and prepare for their journey ahead. This group will be held on six Saturday mornings, starting June 13th (no meeting on July 4th) in Honolulu. The group will be facilitated by Kevin Kawamoto, a licensed social worker who has years of experience in Gerontology.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of symptoms, including memory loss, that can be the result of a variety of conditions. While Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, it is not the only one. Early diagnosis is essential to identify causes that may be resolved, and in some cases, to begin treatments that can be effective only if started early. Persons with dementia can live independent, quality lives for many years.

There is no fee to participate but group participants must be registered in advance. Call the Catholic Charities Hawai`i Senior Services Intake Line, 808-527-4777, to find out more.

Living “Holy Restlessness” in Hawaiʻi

(Theodore Trimmer / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

“To form consciences that are free and endowed with a holy restlessness is a necessary condition for the Christian faith to appear as a fully human proposal.” Such a faith is capable of transforming the lives of individuals and of society, of inspiring prophetic change in the face of the tragedies and forms of poverty of our time, and of encouraging a continual search for God that is never satisfied." - Pope Leo XIV, Address to the Catholic University of Central Africa, April 2026

During his recent trip to Africa, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the importance of forming consciences marked by what he calls a “holy restlessness.” Speaking to university students, he reminded them that education is not only about knowledge or professional success, but about forming people prepared to serve the common good.

A “holy restlessness” is not anxiety or dissatisfaction for its own sake. It is that quiet stirring within the heart that refuses to accept injustice, notices suffering, and keeps asking: What more can I do? Where is God calling me now? It is the voice of conscience—the “inner sanctuary,” as Pope Leo describes it—where we encounter God and are drawn toward truth, goodness, and love. Read more...

Saint of the Week

Saint Damien of Molokai
1840–1889
Memorial - May 10

Jozef De Veuster was the youngest of seven children born into a poor farming family in central Belgium. Jozef went to school until the age of thirteen, at which time he had to assist his father on the family farm. A few years later, after his older brother entered religious life, Jozef’s father sent Jozef to college to prepare him to take over the family business. At school, during a mission, he heard God calling him to religious life. At the age of twenty, Jozef followed in his brother’s footsteps and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Read more...
