What's new in Rutland County

Governor Phil Scott's "Capital for a Day" Heads to Rutland County

Governor Phil Scott and members of his cabinet will be in Rutland County on Friday, June 5 for its "Capital for a Day" 14-county tour.

Governor Scott first launched this initiative in June 2018, and he and his cabinet visited all 14 counties over the following 10 months. Capital for a Day gives local constituents, municipal government leaders and other partners the opportunity to connect directly with state leadership and staff.

“Spending a day in each county gives us an opportunity to hear directly from Vermonters, see the good things happening in their communities and understand how decisions made in Montpelier are impacting them,” said Governor Scott. “In the past, challenges identified on these visits led us to make historic investments in wastewater systems to support economic growth, strengthen our CTE centers, collaborate on public safety issues and more.”

Art in Motion at the Chaffee Art Center

"Art in Motion" Exhibit Opening at the Chaffee Art Center on Friday, June 5th

The Chaffee Art Center, Your Center for Creativity, invites the community to the opening of our new Exhibit, "Art in Motion" on Friday, June 5th from 5pm to 7pm. Stop by this free event and enjoy a glass of wine and light bites.

The Chaffee is excited to collaborate with Rutland Railway Museum, Rutland Railroad Historical Society, Community Train Enthusiasts and Chaffee artist members to bring you this fun, creative Exhibit celebrating railroad history, as well as showcasing our artists' work. There will be trains displayed and historical photos. Fun fact: George Thrall Chaffee, who built the mansion that the Chaffee Art Center calls home, was a prominent figure in the train circle. He even had a train station in Clarendon renamed for his 3 children: ALice, FREderick and CHArlotte...Alfrecha Station.

There will also be a special display that will feature the works of one-hundred-sixty 7th and 8th grade students from Mr. VanDerKern’s Design Lab at Fair Haven Union Middle School that engaged in a hands-on stone carving unit supported by a grant from the Vermont Superintendents Association and the Vermont Handcrafters Association, with support from the West Rutland Carving Studio. Beginning with hand carving local talc and then using a Glowforge laser to engrave slate tiles, students created original works rooted in the Slate Valley’s slate heritage. Stone provided by Vermont Marble, Granite, Slate & Soapstone.

Chaffee artist members’ works will be on display and for sale throughout the mansion galleries and in the Gallery Shoppe that is filled with handmade treasures and gift ideas for any occasion. Be sure to take time to explore the 1890’s architecture and history. Exhibit will be on display until July 17th.

Plan to visit the Chaffee to experience the beauty of the 1890’s Queen Anne Victorian Mansion and the wonderful works of art throughout, plus our Gallery Shoppe with old-fashioned candy! Enjoy a cup of tea while you browse, or plan to meet a friend and cozy up in one of the many seating areas. Free Wi-Fi available. Plus, don't forget to check out the 100-foot Pollinator Garden with native plantings, growing Sculpture Garden, and over a dozen gardens on the property.

As the Chaffee Art Center celebrates 65 years in the Rutland Community, you are invited to join as an artist, single or family member to help the Chaffee to continue to inspire and cultivate creativity, while positively impacting the vitality of our community through the arts.

Check out www.chaffeeartcenter.org and the Chaffee Art Center Instagram and Facebook pages for updates on events, classes camps, and more. Call 802.775.0356, info@chaffeeartcenter.org, or stop by the Chaffee Art Center at 16 South Main Street in Rutland, VT.

Rutland Regional Medical Center

Rutland Regional Medical Center Achieves Fourth Magnet® Designation

On May 26, 2026, Rutland Regional Medical Center (RRMC) attained Magnet designation for the fourth consecutive time, which was officially announced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). This redesignation is a testament to RRMC’s continued dedication to high-quality nursing practice.

The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program® distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. This credential is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.

“Magnet designation reflects RRMC’s unwavering commitment to delivering innovative high-quality care and reinforces the progress we are making as an organization,” said Kelly Watson, RRMC’s Chief Nursing Officer. “The participation and support of all employees, providers, volunteers, and teams across the organization played an important role in upholding the hospital’s commitment to continuous improvement and exceptional patient-centered care.”

Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition provides specific benefits to health care organizations and their communities, such as:

  • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
  • Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue rates.
  • Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
  • Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.

The Magnet Model provides a framework for nursing practice, research, and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC evaluates applicants across several components and dimensions to gauge an organization’s nursing excellence. The foundation of this model comprises various elements deemed essential to delivering superior patient care. These include the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.

To achieve initial Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. This process includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit, and a review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition.

Over the past 18 months, RRMC has completed all aspects of the rigorous redesignation process, meeting required credentialing standards and the five Magnet components including: Transformational Leadership; Exemplary Professional Practice; New Knowledge, Innovation & Improvements; Structural Empowerment; and Empirical Outcomes.

RRMC received 8 exemplars throughout the review process. Exemplars are noteworthy elements of excellence in nursing practice seen during the review and survey process. RRMC’s exemplars centered around professional board certification rates, the role and utilization of the advanced practice registered nurses and outperforming several benchmarks in clinical quality indicators.

“The journey to Magnet designation is the result of multidisciplinary collaboration, innovation and a shared focus on great patient care,” said Judi Fox, President and CEO of RRMC. “These efforts reflect meaningful advancement in our strategic goals to deliver quality care and be an employer of choice. Together we are building a stronger culture while we continue to address the many challenges that are facing healthcare organizations today.”
