Balmoral Keruse secures victoryThe Auckland Bowling Club was illuminated with the brilliance of talent as the Bowls 3Five Final unfolded on Tuesday evening. Despite the sun having set, the intensity on the green only grew brighter as teams vied for supremacy in this fiercely contested championship. Following three rounds of rigorous competition, there were notable shifts in the standings, setting the stage for an exhilarating showdown among the top eight qualifiers. Each team showcased their skill, making for a captivating spectacle throughout the finals. Auckland reps shine in weekend competitionsWhat a scorching Sunday it was on the greens for our Auckland representatives, donned in their iconic blue and white attire! Amidst soaring temperatures, the competitive fervour rose as our squads showcased their skills on the green. The squads delivered stellar performances at the Quad Series and 1-5 Battle of the Manukau on Sunday, 18 February, placing Auckland at the top of the table for both competitions. Despite fierce challenges from opponents, our bowlers demonstrated resilience and skill. Pat Walsh Memorial-- Phil Taylor This prestigious tournament makes its return to Bridge Park on St Patrick’s Day – 17 March 2024. This highly anticipated event promises a day of great competition and it is also a fundraiser for Māori Youth Sports Scholarships. This year's tournament aims to surpass the previous edition's of awarding approx. $4,000 worth of scholarships. Previous scholarship recipients have included upcoming bowlers such as Aiden Takarua, McKenzie Blucher, Liam Hill, and David Motu in this exciting endeavour. With the support of the Walsh family, the day extends beyond the competition, food will be provided from early morning onwards to a sumptuous lunch, ensuring participants are fuelled for peak performance! Additionally, raffles will be held throughout the day, offering attendees the opportunity to contribute to the noble cause of supporting Māori Youth Sports Scholarships. Commencing at 9:30 am, this event brings together a diverse array of participants, including serious bowlers, former All Blacks, Kittyhawk members, and social bowlers. Past All Blacks photographed with scholarship winners Kittyhawk win-- Greame Scott Congratulations to Jason Adams, Larry Ferregel, and Keith Pickernell for clinching the prestigious Rod Seymour Puhoi Hotel Trophy during our memorable trip to Leigh Bowling Club this Monday! Not only did we have a blast competing, but we also managed to give back to our community by donating the proceeds from the day to the local Fire Brigade. It's wonderful to combine fun with supporting those who keep us safe! And of course, what's a successful bowling day with a mandatory stop at the Puhoi Hotel! We wrapped up the day with a delicious snack of mussels paired perfectly with a refreshing ale or two! Field DayAuckland and North Harbour Greenkeepers Association will be holding a Field Day on Monday 25 March at Takapuna Bowling Club at 9.30am. We will have Tara from NZ Sports Turf Institute joining us, as well as Carl from Prebble Seeds. Topics will be on Growsafe and Certified Handler on legislative requirements. There will also be talks about the training program that is now available to greenkeepers. All Greenkeepers, Club Superintendents and those interested in attending are most welcome. A light lunch will also be provided. -- Jess McKinven Bowls NZ Online Laws courseThe Bowls New Zealand Umpires Committee is planning the next Online Laws Course. This course is run annually to support Umpire groups who may have interested people wanting to learn the Laws of the Sport and ultimately become an umpire. The first of two courses during 2024 is in April 2024.
Candidates will learn the Laws of the Sport and Domestic Regulations to pass the Umpires Laws Examination. On-green tutoring is required for the measuring components if the candidate wishes to become a Full Level 1 Umpire. This on-green tutoring will occur locally with the relevant Umpires Group. More details will be shared in due course with interested candidates and Umpire Groups.
