Register here Structuring your academic writing (H&MS focus) When: 22 June 2023, 12:30pm - 3:00pm This workshop will cover strategic approaches to writing, contextualised to the various types of writing that H&MS or biological sciences HDRs are likely to come across in their candidature (e.g. the thesis, research papers, candidature milestone reports, research participant information, ethics applications, sci-comm, etc.). There will also be a series of workshop activities for students to troubleshoot their writing, allowing them to be guided in determining practicable solutions. Register here Communicate Your Research! Here’s how When: 26 June 2023, 10:00am - 1:00pm Now more than ever, researchers need to be able to communicate their research. And now, more so than ever before, researcher can be their own broadcasting platform! In this workshop we will look at how to set up an online network to communicate your research. We will also look at some practical skills that will help you to create content for your research communications - how to take great pics, how to write blogs quickly and how to create video and how to do all of this with equipment that you already probably own - a mobile phone. When: 28 June 2023, 10:30am - 12:00pm This webinar focuses on the post-award grant management process, and will help researchers to understand their responsibilities and the timelines involved after successfully being awarded a grant. Register here Speech screening: understand why you sound like you When: 6 July 2023, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Have you ever recorded yourself speaking only to delete it immediately because you don't like the way you sound? In this session, volunteers can undergo a speech screening so all participants can learn what to do to improve pitch, pace, timing and body language. We use technology to measure the volunteers' "speaker stats" both before and after. This workshop is suited for HDR students who want to understand and transform the way they present their research. Register here Other Training & Events An introduction to locating author research impact metrics When applying for grants or promotion, a key factor in presenting yourself is to highlight the impact that your research has had. This could be via traditional citation metrics such as h-index, and/or via alternative metrics such as citations in policy documents. This session, organised by Research Services, is an introduction to using tools such as SciVal, Scopus, Web of Science and Altmetric Explorer (all available through the Library) to locate your author research impact metrics. The Library has a new Laptop Self-Service Unit that provides students with 24/7 access to laptops that they can take off campus. This service is available to all students at the University of Adelaide. The unit is located in the Barr Smith Library on Level 3. There are currently 24 laptops which can be borrowed for either 7 days, or 4 hours if you just need quick access. We hope you enjoy this new service! Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA) will teach you about the signs & symptoms of common disabling mental health problems, how to provide help, and how to access professional help. The guide provides an introduction to some of the AI tools available, how to cite and acknowledge their use, and the use of such tools in research articles intended for publication. Volunteer opportunity for STEM students - Inspiring Women Program The Diversity Team in SET are looking for volunteers to assist in our Inspiring Women program. This program’s goal is to engage primary aged girls in STEM activities in a hands on and engaging way. We are looking for a number of current students to support our girls through the STEM activities by encouraging and giving gentle nudges in the right direction if they get a little distracted or confused. These students can be undergraduate or post graduate students but will need to be able to travel to North Terrace campus to contribute to the program. Lunch will be provided to volunteers.
